Hi guys
Im stuck, iv found this VL berlina thats been turned into a Calais replica, it looks nice and is in ok condition, the paint is a bit faded but nothing i cant fix. Its seriously low and the wheels and tyres are brand new. The engine runs but needs some work, its running rich and the timing is out... both of which im positive i can fix. Im pretty mechanically minded and i love a challenge. This will be my 2nd finished project car, and im only 18.
The other option is, for the same price as this car, get a nice set of wheels for my vs calais, which although having engine work, still runs on the standard 15" alloys.
I understand that the VL will require road worthy and reg, so that pushes my costs up, but im happy to sell my last project car to pay for it.
What do you guys think? New wheels or New ride?
keep the VS mate and whack on some VY senator sigs or machined black VE SS rims. if you get the VL you'll forever be fixing bits and pieces, i know from experience as my best mate has a VL and i drive a VS, there's always something that has to be fixed on his car, while mines limited to materialistic things like the paintwork etc.
just my opinion... VL's do go hard, but so will your VS i would imagine![]()
Yerp the VS can hold its own... Just seems to be those newer V8's that it struggles against. A shift kit could help that.
There is no way i would sell the VS, i love that car. The VL is just gonna be a project, get the paint looking nice, fix the engine issues and sell it with RWC for a profit. Which im pretty sure i could do, given its cheap as chips.
id say keep the cash and maybe spend it on the VS.. coz i know that i wouldnt be buying a Vl (coz i hate them) but also i wouldnt really want to be forking out cash to fix it up, and then having to apy $550 for rego etc..
But each to their own
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.
Go with the new wheels...the thing is, do you really need another car, and if so, could you afford to run it, once you get it on the road?

I just spoke the the guy that owns the car i WAS looking at. To me it seemed soooo dodgy, i mean if the car wasnt stolen then id be bloody amazed
get some nice mags for the vs for sure mate. Not having owned a vl myself, i'd say that unless a fair whack of parts have been replaced since new, it's gonna be something new you've gotta fix fairly regularly. Plus imho theyre getting a little long in the tooth... i know there'd probably be some rust to fix as vl's were prone to rusting around the windows.
I was annoyed enough having to run stockers on my vs between when i had my 18's off and got my 19's on lol. So yeah, wheels for sure.
Cheers
Well put it this way. Do you want to join a cult?? Everyone who has owned a VL still owns a VL, or misses there VL. Lots of people sell them and later down the track will buy another VL. People who dont like VL's have never owned a VL. And VL's are beginning to go up in price, especially CALAIS, CALAIS TURBO'S and BT1'S. I guess its the RB30 what makes the VL so popular... I couldn't give a flying **** about VL V8'S.
Just take a look at calaisturbo.com.au - Powered by vBulletin Its a Forum dedicated to VL's and is possibly one of the largest automotive Forums in Australia....

haha, is the vl non turbo?
it's pretty obvious which one is going to get you more of a return.
wheels or a car that could earn you money, how much would you be paying for the vl.
is it a good quality replica or have they used poor quality parts or fibreglass copies.
if it has all the calais bits and pieces then you're resale is worth more then a new set of wheels even if you strip it.
given you've got the rear lights/garnish - eyebrows and boot mould, side skirts, eyelids, interior, skirts.
what i just said there, the eyebrows and boot mould 150 bucks.
side skirts 100 bucks
eyelids anywhere from 500-1000
interior, anywhere from 400-800 depending on colour and quality
and as for wheels, you buy a 1200 dollar tyre and wheel combo, 3 weeks time you're lucky to sell them for 400 bucks.
You think the VL is not a cult car???

VL's suck, get some wheels.
Id get the VL,im the same as you i like to tinker and mess around with cars. You will always learn heaps by trying to do it yourself.I can tell you want the VL so go for it.The wheels you get will date too soon and you will want another set.
Keep the vs for sure, ad some wheels and you will ad some more enthusiasm at the same time..
Just to give you some ides....

to keep it clean, im going to keep my VS. I do a fair few k's and i need a reliable and comfy car.
The VL is a good replica, the only thing on it not calais is the chassis number and compliance plates, which say "BERLINA" haha
It has done a few kms, but that i mean 650,000. But he is going to chuck in another auto, and the engine actually seems ok. Good compression, oil is clean, no leaks oil leaks (amazingly)
Its been lowered by means of angle grinder to spring.
The paint is faded and needs new clean coat (give me a day alone with it and its done)
Iv also got no plans in joining a cult, infact if i tell my best mate im buying one im gonna get the **** beaten out of me.
While i was looking at the car i fiddled with the timing and get it running well, then moving it back so that he wouldnt put the price up. HAHA
Basically its an OK car, and i want to turn it into a legal off street drag car OR get it looking MINT then sell it.
For $500 (with a full tank of petrol) its pretty tempting.
Im turned off getting new wheels because i want my VS to keep its beautiful standard look to it. Have it as a sleeper - a fairly slow sleeper (V6 ewww HAHA)
i think ill speak to him again tomorrow and take the trailer around of friday. Then i can maybe bring it to KK on friday night so everyone can laugh at me HAHA
its ok its not on gas.
i figure, $500 bucks, its got mods that i wanna do and now i dont have to, even if its megga ****ed, and given its got 650,000 on it, im gonna need to get a new engine (so that makes it $900 car. I noticed the local wreckers has a vl with 98,000 on the clock and a massive crush on the roof from a power pole. Oouch)
$500!!! That thing would be living with me right now if I lived close. Hahaha thats so cheap. You could take off the flip lights and sell them for $1000....

You dont want some old VL that someone else has ****ed with, its just going to be a problem car. Keep your hard earned money.
Lol you guys are crack ups. Even if it is a hunk of **** he could quad triple his money if he wrecked it.
Calais flip up lights $1000
Calais garnish, tail lights, boot mold and eyebrows $200-400 depending on condition
Interior if in good condition $500????
Calais side skirts $100-200
Calais door moulds $100-200
The list goes on...

im staying away from it, i wanna do bigger and better things to my VS... Its my baby, but even babies need a flogging sometimes... in terms of cars
I don't like the stereotype, and mine's a Turbo Hmmmmmmmmmm?
It's a shame, because VLs are good cars it's just the stupid stereotype attached. Almost everyone I know that don't like VLs uses the stereotype as their basis. No mention of the actual car itself, because half of them have never driven a VL in their life.
I love VLs, but it sounds like you made the right choice mate. I would personally never touch a replica, only an original.
