i just changed my oil and filter and after i filled it back up with oil i seen the filter still had the old seal sticking out i need to know if i take the filter back off will i loose all my oil your help would be great as i am now kicking myself![]()
You will only loose the oil in the filter.
You could also back the filter off about 1/2 a turn and use a stanley knife to cut the old seal .
I like my roo well done

thanks for your help as did not want to loose good oil
na you wont loose much at all. I over filled my oil a little a while back, so i decided to drain some out of the oil filter, and not much oil comes out at all.
Australia. Love it or leave it
I've always wondered, how bad is it to overfill with oil? Will it cause damage? I'm not too familiar with the oiling system..

yes it is bad for your engine. you drown the crank, and can do some other damage as well.

Depends on the amount of overfill. A little won't hurt until it reaches the crank, this causes the oil to froth, you will lose oil pressure as it will have tiny bubbles in it and it won't flow. A lot will increase crank case pressure and pop seals.
On an ecotec every mm of oil on the dipstick is equal to 50ml.
How much is damaging? we went about 3-4mm above the full mark in my VN once, nothing really happened...

You would have to go about 20mm above the full mark to start getting cavitation.
aha so pretty much under 10mm over the mark is nothing to worry about? I'll remember that as being the safe barrier![]()

10mm is probably a little too much, but I don't think it would be harmful. Unless your car burns oil, there's no need to overfill anywayI personally prefer to run a couple of mill under rather than over - I don't loose oil between changes though, so there's no risk.

If you have a weapy rear main don't even go to the full mark, but 10mm over when not running shouldn't be a drama.
I don't lose oil (except a tiny bit I can smell burning, not noticeable between services) but occasionally go over the mark a couple of mm unintentionally... all good
