A mate of mine, well actually her son, has been fined, she wants to know what could happen if it went unpaid, which it has.
So what happens now? Does his licence just get suspended? Can he opt for a payment plan or extension? I would assume he only had 6 points left on his Lic.He was fined for having extra person in car after 11pm (he was sober and done driving) but the law is the law and he is not suppose to have more than 1.
It was the fine is almost $500 and he should have paid it. He didn't they sent a reminder staing the same price but it said it carried 6 point penalty(there goes his licence)
TIA I have no idea about fines etc.
Dunno about NSW, but in SA you can arrange to pay it off through the courts but it has to be arranged before the due date.
In SA, after the due date has passed it will then be escalated to court where the original fine will be increased plus court fees. License will be suspended after the fine is paid or a court decision has been made.
Hi Christie,
In NSW, fines goes to the State Debt Recovery. All fines previously went through Infringement Processing Bureau. If all points have been lost, 6 in total for a P Plater, then an automatic suspension period will start, usually for a period of 3 months. Best thing for them to do would be ring State Debt (number should be on the infringement notice/reminder and inform them of what they intend to do and make arrangements through them. If no payment is made, vehicle registration can also be cancelled and will remain so until fines are paid up. You are given a 3 week period to pay an infringement. If no payment is made, they send a reminder with another 3 weeks to pay. After that, if they have received no notification, then they will start the process of suspensions and cancellations.
Thanks for that!
Arnt you allowed extra people in car after 11pm over there? What a load of crap. The law is pretty screwed up in some places. Every weekend i get a lift home from parties and clubs and stuff from sober P plate drivers. I thought that would be the responsible thing to do.
Australia. Love it or leave it
Well you would think it is a responsible thing to do, I didnt know about it until my mate was telling me about it.
Pretty messed up rule, From 1 July 2007, all provisional P1 drivers under the age of 25 must not drive a vehicle with more than one passenger (other than the driver) under 21 years old between 11pm and 5am.
So now ya gota have 4 deso drivers haha. Its hard enough getting one mate to stay off the turps for the night. Glad im over here in canberra.

All fines still go through the IPB and then get forwarded to the State Debt Recovery office if the fine is not payed. Once it has been sent to the SDR they will resend the fine with another fee of around $50 added on top. If it is still not payed they will suspend his licence, cancel the registration of any car in his name until it is payed and then he has to contact them to get the suspension/cancellations removed it is not automatic
