Just got rid of the old magna sedan and got myself a secondhand VZ Holden Wagon, all that extra room.
I would like any advice on the best roof racks and cradles to put on the car.
I need to carry two sea kayaks (Mirage 580 -approx 60CM wide) and on the magna I needed to use the bar type to have the width.
The last racks and cradles made a far bit of noise, when not loaded.
It would be good if the cradles could be easliy removed when not in use.
Being nice and new I want it to look good.
The holden has fairly narrow roof.
I have looked on a few rack sites but thought I would check for any pracitical advise out there.
Any tips and bargin shopping tips would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Phantom
Holden recommend a maximum of 80 kg as the load limit for roof racks.
Remember, the larger (in area) the item(s) carried on your racks the greater the wind resistance/force. It is not uncommon for racks (including load) to be ripped off when vehicle being driven too fast. You will need to ensure that the kayaks are securely fastened to the vehicle. Nothing worse than following vehicle having to negotiate items that have become detached from vehicle in front. Known to cause deaths due to accidents. It is a good idea to run a strap (tie) from both front and rear of kayaks to front and rear of vehicle. Helps to keep things secure and reduces the load (strain) on roof racks.
Have you checked Thule as they have a large variety of components for varying loads including kayaks. Thule Australia > Roof Racks + Roof Boxes + Bike & Ski Carriers
