Hi all, first time poster, feeling a like a complete idiot at present.
I have a 95 vs exe sedan. (Automatic trans)
Last night while driving down a big hill I decided to take the gear from drive in to netural. At the bottom of the hill (as I start to slow down) I foolishly flicked it up into reverse at around 45km/h.
Basically the engine cut, and the car grinded to a halt. I burning smell was instantly present and I assumed that I must have blown up the transmission
To my suprise!, a second later the engine restarted and I put it into drive and it was as if nothing had happened!. Its has driven fine all today, no visible damage or liquid leakage!
Is there some sort of automatic shut down procedure that prevents the gearbox from engaging in reverse in such circumstances???--(thus automatically turning the engine off)?-- is my car liable to to collapse in the next few days???
To me, it defies all logic, physics and common sense that the car is performing as if it never happened!!!!
Help appreciated,
Ben
haha oops bet you wont be doing that again!
its one tough nut, its done 240k , and i the 70k ive had it all ive needed to replace is a midddle muffler, 1 bearing, a power steering hose and the water pump!. I guess i'll be adding a nice 1000 dollar recond' gearbox! **** im a stupid bastard!
it might be ok...see how it goes...iv done the same thing but was going like 5-10km/h at the time so no dramas...obviously i got a different box in mine but i took it for a service and the guy said its rooted (he showed me the parts etc so was thinking it was legit) and wont last another month... just thought i'd drive it till it dies ...so 1 year later its still going fine no problems at all...who ever called them traumatic's where dead wrong![]()
you just want an excuse to convert it to manual, dont you, lol

It should be fine, all these auto's have an inhibitor switch to protect the auto when stuff like this happens.
I'd say the burning smell was tyre rubber man. The autos are tested over and over at the factory to be able to handle this kind of stuff
I've been told by people at our transport branch that if you do that with a VZ the transmission will drop out from under the car.
Does it work with the VYs aswell, VicCop? You know, there's only one way to find out![]()

now that'd be a nice present for that person travelling just a bit too close behind you...
Funnily enough, mythbusters did one on this exact thing. Proved it didn't actually cause the car to stop on the spot (saving your brakes) and didn't do any major damage either, however they didn't recommend doing it repeatedly.
Is 'vic cop' actually a real cop?? I did 9 months as a probationary ****stable in NSW, just recently got out. Cops who really are cops normally go out of their way to avoid letting people know of their occupation.
Yes, If the computer on a VS can prevent a major mech **** up, Im sure the VZ can aswell!
Yes he is .....

id still test reverse up a hill, if it starts slipping the clutch in the transmission for reverse is stuffed, clutch packs are cheap, it's paying a tranny specialist to fir them that hurts.
you'd be suprised how common a thing to do this is, ive done it in an old xe, was doing silly things ina matexs paddock in second (in the auto) went to slip it back to drive but foolish me held the button in and popped it into reverse at about 40 odd kph
mainly seems to happen to people when they are doing something they probably shouldn't.
I use to work in an open cut a few years ago when I had a look at a uchlid (GIANT DUMP TRUCK)
The driver told me those big suckers where designed to be thown in reverse to stop
hey mate ive had 1st hand experencne here. 97 vt commodore doing bout 80 clicks drunken passenger put transmission into r.engine cut out ,we came to a stop.restarted the engine and she was all good.
the germans designed it, the aussies built it, the japs got it moving and the wogs got it dosing...
Vic Cop a hypothetical question, If forrest gump's VS commodore did that in front of you or any other police and you were behind him can he get done for loss of traction (anti hoon law).Ride: VY Acclaim S2

from memory - VP was the last commodore with a hydraulic shift transmission. VR onwards is electronic control by PCM. i've never tried it, but i'd be amazed if the computer didn't say no to any attempt to shift into R at forward speed.
are you sure the VS really shifted?
