Hi Guys,
Sure I'm probably going to be flamed for asking, but, has anyone, or does anyone want to admit that they have modified their AFL Valve on their LPG Tank so that it will hold more Gas?
Sure we all know it's dangerous, as the tank requires a minimum 20% air fuel ratio to allow for expansion on hot days etc, but for the person who travels to remote areas where fuel is not available, this can be usefull and save you and the Family from being stranded by running out of LPG.....
I'm about to do mine on my Patrol, as it is not Duel Fuel and I will need the extra 20 litres to get back to a fuel station this long weekend, I will fill the car while on my trip, and continue driving, never parking the car with 100% in it's Tank..................
So, anyone with any experience regarding this??
If I'm not pulling Toyota's out of the Bush, I'm pulling 12's in the Sig :-)
I would think that this is a pretty stupid thing to do. Get a second tank fitted.
My wife got rearended in her VY sedan. The only thing that stopped the car from being a writeoff was the spare tyre taking a lot of the impact. On my VY wagon, the donut tank is in the spare wheel well, and since she had her accident, I have been a bit concerned about what would happen if I got hit from behind.
Adding another risk of an incorrectly set AFL seems more dangerous than the few extra km it would get you per fill.
JMHO.

Fair Call, I will be towing a Camper Trailer, so rear end collision never crossed my mind....

Try and get a bigger tank or an extra tank.Id rather run out of gas with my family than blow them up.
hi
i am in the process of taking a old LPG tank off a boot. if i undo the nuts in the filler line will the gas still escape? also what about the supply side? i herd that there is a valve in the supply side to manual close/ shut down...
any help would be great
ta
Yeh a little gas from the line will escape, probably last up to 1 minute of hissing..lol..
After that, you can safely remove the tank, you actually have to undo the screws on the actual plate on the tank to open it to atmosphere....
I've done it heaps of times, actually had to do it in the bush once :-(
Good Luck :-)

DANGEROUS it IS.. BUT for the record ... an easy way to get more past the AFL is to simply loosen off the tank brackets and rotate the tank so the filler compartment is higher then I'ts recommended 80 degrees. the float level works kinda like a toilet float. by rotating tank the AFL will cut off later ..you will still have room for bit of expansion too.
good luck modify your AFL just dont tell your insurance company as this could void your policy in the event of an accident or explosion .
12 years running straight gas never yet run out of fuel even when running single tank or dual tanks driving to and from the border in remote areas . buy yourself and adapter to hook onto a 9kg bottle
Yep an old thread, but the simple answer is to get a forklift bottle and transfer lead. Alternately, get 2 big BBQ bottles for backup.
With lead set in the attached image, it is possible to run a car from a BBQ bottle or forklift bottle and fill a BBQ from a forklift bottle.
Remember when questioned about the bits by the LPG police behind the gas parts counter, they are for a Nitrogen transfer and test set a avoid the Soap Opera.
