I know it's stupid running out of juice but the gauge still showed some fuel although not much.
I stopped the car with it running ok and left it for about 8 hours....tried to start it and one cough and it stopped .....wound it over but the engine wouldn't start.
I put alittle bit of fuel in it and it refused to start.I then put in a fair bit and it ran.
Is there something in the tank that drains out when you stop like a swirl pot but when you're moving it fills up.?

Maybe it sucked up some of the crap on the bottom of your fuel tank.. It's realy not a good idea to let it run so low man..

When you stop on flat ground you get an accurate gague of how much fuel is left. When your moving obiosuvly the fuel sensor can't get an accurate gague and therefore it may vary quite a bit.

    HI,
It could still be your fuel pump playing up refusing to pump up last bit of petrol, had it happen in a vk refused to pick up the last quarter of a tank, copuld also be fuel filter beening or getting blocked.

You are on the right track, they have a swirl pot that will stay full whilst you pump is in operation. The return line runs directly into the pot on a VP, when you stop it does drain back to level with the other full in the tank. That is why it would not pick it up. The pump is submerged in the swirl pot to keep it cool as well as pick the fuel up, not a good practice to run down that far... they tend to burn out.

The cars gauge still read something above empty and the trip computer said I had 50 kms to go and the low fuel light just came on although my missus was driving the car before me and it could have come on for her before she switched the engine off and the low fuel reset itself when on level ground.
Its just if you keep heaps of fuel in the tank you seem to be at the servo all the time.
