i got a 2000 vs series 3 ute , it started missing like all hell running rough , 1 mechanic heard it going said piston or thrown a rod , the other drove it away rang me and said piston ...needs new motor , well aint got the cash 4 that so i bought a 93 vs commodore ....bugger cant use the motor , but can use the tyres the price i paid 4 it justifies this ...ony paid 400 for it , mite even get the car fixed only smashed in the rear right quarter anyways , how can they say its a piston when no one has had the heads off ??? any suggestions , the top part of the motor like to the valley cover is pulled off , do i put it all back together get it running again to its missing and carying on or do i just do the motor ????
what do you mean by missing
Homer: "for once in my life someone is calling me sir without (your making a scene)"
well like it was running minus a cylinder , smelt like real petrol smell if u know wot i mean
ive had few probs with her like when u went from 80 to 100 it like had a flat spot then one day i give it to her and that was it engine light running rough , sent it to mechanic and he put new air flow meter in it , then it started again then after a while engine light and stuff took it back to mechanic got it back a week later and he put new head gaket on the left bank , then 8 months after this i left work give her a squirt then she started running rough then ran fine for about 20 klm then she started doing it again for bout 3 min then came right again then after about 5 k's down the road that was it just wouldnt stop runnig rough so put new plugs leads in but still kept on running rough , the mechanic came picked her up took it away then rang and said need new motor ??? piston he says , so i went and picked it up on tow truck and now she sitting with half the motor apart ???
What were the results of a compression test, and error codes, and how many k's on it. It sort of sounds sorta like bottom end bearings to me. If you need to do heads or bottom end ect, your cheapest option might be to grab yourself a running second hand ecotec motor and put it in, as you have the time now with you new "93 VS"to run around in.
na the 93 vs is a repairable write off , left rear quater smashed in , thingin of gettin it repaired but
why cant you swap motors?
why carnt you use the motor
project vs wagon...5speed
vs wagon acclaim
why couldnt you use the motor? :P
As said above, just swap the motor over. It's the cheapest option. Your mechanic will charge you between $250-$550 to swap it over. Just ring around a few wreckers for a motor.
You can often find them for less than $400. Otherwise you could always rent an engine hoist from Kennards, get a few mates and swap the motor yourself. It'll only cost you $50 hire plus a bit of beer for your mates.
Leave your old motor alone. You're just going to be wasting time and money.

This may not help, but start the "missing" motor at night and lift the bonnet. It may just be the leads shorting out, a simple fix. (you will see the flashes of the shorts)
If no joy, see if you can pick which cylinder is not firing. Stop the motor, pull the spark plug and see if it is: -
Clean - Firing properly - look elsewhere
Sooty - not firing - replace etc.
Oily - rings, valve guides etc - costly.
This may help in seeing if the problem is major or simple.
Did you get it hot by any chance? Ecotecs have a habit of warping pistons when they over heat. Rebuilt bottom end is the only fix.
