The QR puts it in the HJ - HZ range. But you probably know that already

Found some QR's in the HG's too. So it's probably a "red" motor.

If it is a 'QR' engine number it is a red 253 out of a HQ (and maybe later models). 308s were 'QT'.

Statesmans had '11' in front of the 'QR' or 'QT' number.

Torana V8s were 'HR' (for 253), 'HT' (for 308), and 'HZ' (for 308 L34).

Earlier Aussie V8s in the HK, HT, HG were '253H' and '308H'.

It's been a while since I played with the V8s and the info is 'as I recall' so don't flame me if I'm mistaken anywhere.

I read somewhere that it was a small cylinder sleave to take it back from 5.0L 308 to a 4.9L 304.

^^^ this must be untrue then... If the crank was reground.

Mate, you might want to check some of your facts before you put them on here.

I stand by the info I gave in my first post.

From memory, the crank was re-ground to shorten the stroke by about 0.050 inch (a bit over a millimetre) to bring the capacity down from around 5047cc (308 cu. in.) to 4960cc (304 cu. in.). This brought the engine under the 5 litre international competition limit.

The old 308 block with it's 4 inch bore was retained. Not sure what was done with the rods and pistons.
