Default LOKKA vs LSD vs SPOOL

    hey all,
need some help deciding which is best for my needs. now ive read all the minispool threads and the diff thread. i know all about the spool and im considering it the most atm but i need some other opinions.

i wont be doin burnouts and the car is a daily, i wanna be able to hav fun goin sideways and powerslides etc and thats really about all. LSD's seem to let go after abuse so im not to sure on them.

LSD or a LOKKA will cost the same. im not 2 sure on the lokka and how good it is. i dont want the diff changin from single to locked around corners when it gets whipped out etc. so the question is which is best.

try the minispool for a $100. if you can spin a spanner it should take about 3hr's to do yourself give or take depending on how good you are with the spanners. the mini fits inside your standard open center so if oyu don't like it you can always convert it back to standard later. if you don't like the minispool then remove and fit a LSD later and sell the minispool. a (properly) rebuilt LSD is fine for a daily driver that does odd power slide/burnout.

there are different centers that are reffered to as "lokka's" there is the detroit locker which basically locks as soon as you apply power and makes a loud ratcheting noise as it slips. then there is the air locker. it's acts as a normal open diff until air is applied to the diff and then it becomes "locked" these are normally used in 4X4 applications so they can control the diff depending on the conditions. i think there are also electronic versions of the air lokka as well.

speak to VN LUKE i believe he runs a lokka of some description

You have to think more about what you wanna use it for I reckon!

    From my experience:

If you go out drifting every friday night, the LSD won't last more than a few months... if that.
If you drop the odd powerskid once or twice a day... I wouldn't even consider a lsd.
If you drive regularly and do the occasional slide or powerskid (once a month?) it will last significantly longer...

The spool is absolutely fantastic - reliable, cheap and trustworthy. This is at the expense of having rough slow cornering speeds, leaving feint black marks on white concrete if you're turning, and having an illegal car.

I went from an LSD to a spool, then to a lokka (4wd systems 'lockright'), after a year or two driving with the spoolski - only because I wanted a more legal car. (hah)

All in all, I'm very happy with the lokka in my car so far. It's a little noisy (though it seems to be getting quieter and quieter by the day!). I'm guessing the fact I have a bit of backlash also contributes to the noise (need to get that fixed!) - but now you can barely hear it over the sound of the exhaust.

Basically, the car feels like it's got an open wheeler when going around corners/parking etc.. with a small 'click click click click' as you turn. You can then control the lock-unlock action with the throttle.

    - so for example, if you're half way through parking with your wheel at full lock, and you gently press the gas, it will be 'unlocked' and click into the parking spot.

However, if you're half way through parking and you press the brake and bring the revs up a bit enough to load the motor up, and slowly creep forward, you will hear the wheels 'chattering' as they are now 'locked'.

    - Same situation with turning onto a road... when you're stopped and accelerate slowly, it will just click click click onto whatever road you're going on
    - if you press the gas enough to 'almost' break traction, it will lock both wheels in and 'chatter' onto the road.
-if you mash the gas and have enough power, it will light up both rear wheels and you slide onto the road sideways.

the only catch is that it 'locks in' a lot earlier (with less press of the gas) on gravel or wet roads. As far as sliding around etc is concerned, I haven't noticed any difference between the lokka and spool once sideways.

^^ sound advice - best way is to find out for yourself, and at $100/pop for a minispool it's not that dear ! (plus you can sell a minispooled diff for almost how much it costs you to buy an lsd )

Locked diffs are reffered to as lockers, but they aren't the same.

There is a brand called 'Lokka', which is open when no load/turning and locks when under load.

While there a good system, if an SA cop drives past you when your turning, and hears the loud ratchetting sound, you'll be getting a regency defect, even tho that type is completely legal.

Try the spool, i doubt you'll change it after driving with it for a while.

I can see that happening! The RWC guys wanted to knock me back for a certificate because of a 'diff that needs attention' ! they were cool once i explained/demonstrated, though.

I think peanuts has a KAAZ center? Might be worth looking into? The only thing I've really ever heard about them is the price !

Yeah i've heard the same. And seen first hand a mild Auto 5L (cop chip yo) kill one. Hence why i stuck with the spool.

kaaz is to much was speakin to boss at lonsdale. the lokka system does seem good for my use but my main consern is the wear and tear. least a spool is predictable wher i know a LSD wont and the LOKKA system im not sure about.

at this point its between a lokka and spool and probally will book her in next week for it so i got some time.

No, just no. You'd spend more on buying rods than it would be to buy a spool.

Being legal doesn't matter. A cop just has to suspect its illegal, and making the ratchetting sound would draw attention to the car, legal or not.

Yeah that'd be tops man! This pic should explain it. If Twisties support them, they must be good!

I would recomend a spool over a weld any day!!
I just stuffed my diff in my sigma, welded it and then broke it again. And yeah you get lots of metal floating in the diff lol.
Pitty you cant get a spool for my siggy

I think its so funny when ppl advertise there car for sale with a CIG Lokka, and actually think its a locka and they tell ppl it was professionally done and what not
