Gas over filling

[VL Berlina 5speed]

im not sure if its anything to do with my car or the pump
the car is a vs with factroy fitted gas,

last night i filled it up. i did have 10L left in the tank according to the cluster read out
i was watching the dials on the pump as it counted,
52L, 55L, 58L should be full now sweet
62L, 65L, 68L, 70L, 71L, 72L oww @%!#
i stopped the pump flowing as it didnt stop its self!

the gas tank is 68L in size, if there was 10L in already it should of only accepted 58L or so
but the pump squirted 72L which means the tank had 82L in it?????
and which the cluster also comfirmed.


now im abit scketchy about this, does LPG get pressurised into the tank?
is there a selonoid which will activate to stop the tank accepting fuel or would this be a fault from the pump at the servo???

there is a floating level in the tank to stop the tank over filling. it is probably not the best idea to fill it up this much.

i think it means it is letting you completely fill your gas tank instead of only letting it get to 80per cent full as it should do.

If the tank has a 68L capacity at 80% full which is meant to be maximum, then the tank can actually hold 85L and your tank has 82L in it.

I would suggest driving a long way, very fast, in first gear. Try to shake off that excess gas as quickly as possible

It may release a bit of gas from the pressure relief valve in worst case. The pressure relief valve will always relieve excess pressure WAY before the tank is structurally compromised.
I have done it before and gone home and parked outside my bedroom window at night and heard the pressure relief valve going off every so often during the night.
The pressure relief valve is set off at 2.2 MPA and the tanks are tested at 3.3 MPA, but are rated at 3 times that before the welds become an issue.
In other words your pretty safe mate. If you are really concerned go do about 30 or 40 KM's to knock the top off the tank OR park it in a well ventilated area, and then get it to a licenced installer ASAP to get a new AFL valve put in the tank. (run the tank out first)

yer seems the float could be the cause for the over filling
bugger, 380,000km and it finally goes lol

well now it all adds up now, noticed on the pump it said dont fill over 80% a while ago, i was thinking filling till it stop was 100% full and every single time ive over shot the 80% limit by doing that

well i been driving it a fair bit and ive chomped down 19L now

so its back down to 63L now

didnt know that about the tanks and system
ill kill this tank off first then ill try filling again and see how it goes,
could just of been a once off, well i hope it is. im not wasting money on this car!! haha

20% is a generous margin setup for absolutely worse case scenario.
lpg will expand by ~0.3% per degree C.
20% is allowing for a temp increase of the tank contents from the fill temp of ~60C, which if you filled the car at close to freezing and had it parked in the sun on a scorcher then could get close.
