hi people
my girlfriend wants to put bigger wheels on her mazda 3, currently they are 15s and she wants 18s, i have never bothered with legalities but dont want her to be stuffed around by the boys in blue.
Now the question vic roads only states you cannot exceed 15mm in the total diameter of the original model or series. She has 195 65 15s which give a total diameter of 634.5mm, we want 205 45 18s total diameter 641.7mm.
SO this is legal YES? there is no mention of only two sizes up like i always thought....anyideas we rang vicroads any they have no idea....
thanks fellas
they will be fine diameter wise. the only thing they can get you on though is rim width. you cant legally go more than 25mm wider than the widest stock rim. see what rim sizes are listed on the tyre placard.
as a guide, you can have any diameter RIM as long as the diameter of the TYRE isnt bigger or smaller than the factory sizes by 15mm.
It just depends what state you are in, in Western Australia you are only allowed to go an extra 2inches from the standard wheel size. There normally a white sticker on the drivers side door this tells you the standard wheel size what can be fitted to the car. this sticker is good cause in my car it came with 16" rims but the sticker said 17" so that meant that i could go up to 19" and believe me the cops in WA know this.
Sorry!
I think the cop was just trying to give me a yellow sticker (they have been trying to ping me for ages but they haven't) but i have found some thing on the WA DPI site what i didn't know CLICK HERE and look at the 1st Quote mine are 8.5" Woops!
WA have a terrible website lol
WA use the NCOP regulations for tyres and suspension etc. You can find the link via the website you have pasted as well. Here is the link to the relevant Bulletin which is Vehicle Standards Bulletin 14:
http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...g_3Feb2006.pdf
Scroll down to page 14, the relevan stuff starts at the bottom of that page.
Your 8.5" rim should be fine. Im not sure whats going on with that page but WA and NCOP law states this:

In regards to Rim SIZE under NCOP regulations and WA regulations (this is the same for every state in Aus except for SA and perhaps NT at the moment):
