Someone i know has a vs series 2 s pack ute, and has spent $4000 on the auto gearbox getting it fully rebuilt. what would $4000 do to a gearbox? and would it be safe to say it would be able to handle itself and last a long time with that amount of money put into it? i know he had a stage two shift kit installed with the rebuild, and a b+m quickshifter to go with it.
cheers
Could just be a very very very expensive standard rebuild. There is no way of knowing what has been done to it and what it can handle just going off how much it cost...
its been rebuilt with heavy duty components, not just a standard run of the mill rebuild. the box feels much much sharper and responsive than a stock box. suppose he rebuilt it with intentions to put some pretty large amounts of power through it.....
erm 4k for a box rebuild? Would want to be guarenteed to handle 1000hp at the wheels. Cost me 6k for a new 4l65 built up to hande that power requirement.
to pay this much on any car if it is a road car would be ludicrous unless you were planning big HP.

well in his words "its pretty much had the works done to it", how does your box hold up minux? after investing 4k+ on a gearbox, will they pretty much handle anything, and any style of driving?
why would u spend 4 grand on a transmission in a car worth no more then say $6000. AND its a v6? no matter wat u do to a v6 its not gonna be massive power. I reckon it would csot a bit to get the shifter in though. Apparantly there hard to get on a look right?
oh good, i guess im just concerned about long term reliability issues, such as say 70-80 thousand k's down the track. only time will tell huh, cheers for your input guys
no its a v8, only done 94 xxx kms too, so theres a fair bit planned for it i think
i pretty much had that reaction when i drove it this afternoon![]()
yeah, for $4k you would want it to be invulnerable, given that you can buy fully worked 4L60 and 4L60E boxes for around the $2000 mark.

wow , thats expensive, cost me bout $1500-1700 for a fully recon 4l60 , and thats been fitted with - the beast , 1-2 and 3-4 super billet servos, all perf boost valves, shift kit, new bushes , shift kit, extreme performance clutches and steels..
and i havent had a SINGLE problem with it , its behind a turbo v6, and its been THRASHED ,!!!
4k ??? is alot of money.
I would like to know where you can get a worked 4L60E for $2000 from. I asked quite a few tranny places here in Brisbane and most say about $2000-$2200 for a standard rebuild with shift kit and about $2500 for something to handle a bit more.

if i had to spend that much on a gearbox id be buying a powerglide otherwise a tweaked turbo 400 can be had for half that and handle a fair bit of power and be far better then a vs box

The $4G would have included a higher stall too probably. Like someone else said the price is no indication of the quality of build.
I know of someone that got a burger with the lot (except billet shafts and pan) with full roller bearing shaft conversion and reaction carrier as well including converter with anti baloon plates and furnace brazed all round for under $3000 on a 4L60E.
Bottom line, if the builder doesn't have good set up skills it won't matter what parts he puts in it, the thing will still fry. Fluid apply and release etc make or break the box IMO
