D.I.Y upholstery questions

Ok so recently ive been working on a custom parcel shelf, i'm upholstering it in vinyl but have encountered an issue, excess material, no matter how I do it I always get a large mass of excess that tries to bunch up on the project.

any advice? tips?

where is it bunching up? is it behing the board or on top where you can see it?

How are you fixing it and what are you fixing it to?

glue? staplegun? MDF? PLY?

its bunching up on the top, im using permatex spray adhesive and staples around the edge, its just a standard VS parcel shelf with two 6X9 speaker pods made into it using 6X9 spacers and feberglass, the pods are raised and angled, i'll get some batteries and some pics tommorow, any gueses though?

I tried cutting towards the shelf on the excess and pulling across, ive tried anything I can think of.
