    Default A Leaking Oil Filter

after getting rid of all the niggles out of my car

water pump, o2 sensors etc etc and what not..
i've noticed my oil filter is very slightly leaking from the bottom of the seal (maybe about 5 tiny drops a night) I've done the service myself so i guess i've overtightened the filter

my question is can i just leave it? or better still can i just put something on it to seal it up (got a bit of blue gasket glue hanging around from when i did my water pump) or should i just replace the filter although i just spent $50 on oil + filter

    thanks

50 bux for oil, wat did you use?

If its nothing major just leave it to next service, assuming you do it every 5 or 10 thousand.
Did you rub some oil on the seal prior to fitting? It helps it slide around the bloke well you do it up and prevents wrecking the seal. I normally do it up till its firm, then 1/4-1/2 a turn more with the wrench, never had a problem.

when you removed the old filter did you make sure the old seal came off with it, it is quite common for the old seal to be stuck to the block then ya put the new filter on and the new seal will move the the old one allowing it to leak
Nobody wants to play with me

You should only need to hand tighten the new filter, and always make sure you apply some oil to the new seal and the old seal comes off before you install the new filter.

I would remove the filter and start again, dont wait till the next service........ You might have a few drips today but your car wont run very well once the oil is all gone. Good luck and play it safe.

All the oil is in the sump right? You dont need new oil just replace the filter.

possibly not on tight enough. Try to tighten it by hand. if it turns easy its not tight enough. If that dont fix it take the filter off and check / replace it. I usually pull the seal off the new filter and oil both sides before screwing it on - hand tight.
If you need to replace the filter you will need to add about 1/2 litre oil.

ooo sorry $50 a bit of an exaggeration aye...
    30 for oil + 10 for filter=$40

i ended up replacing the filter..always thought everything else in the sump would come splashing out as well! i had a look at the filter and the metal rim where the seal connects to had a slight divet in it, i really doubt i overtightened it that much to do that or dropped it so i might take it back..but thanks anyway

but off the topic and saving me from opening another thread i've replaced both 02 sensors, just serviced with pensoil 15w40, put a high flow panel and checked to see if the airflow meter is clean and currently i've only gotten 150 city km out of half my tank of just normal style driving..

i know i've gotta be a huge whinger over fuel economy but i can't really live on 250-300km a tank..

any suggestions of what else i can do?

a blocked air filter, in an EFI car, will result in less air being able to be sucked into the engine, less air passing the AFM, and potentially LESS fuel consumption due to the engine not being as free revving, nor able to rev as high.

No. A blocked air filter would make the engine struggle to breathe and run badly. Would also cause you to put your foot down a lot more thus using more fuel

    no, it wouldn't

you could rev most engines to 4000rpm with only half an air filter uncovered.

if you don't have the air flow, you simply won't use the fuel, thats kinda how fuel injection works, we're not talking carbies here.

even with a totally blocked air filter, you're NEVER going to use more fuel than a brand new filter, because the engine can't get the air, so it doesn't inject the fuel, no matter how far the throttle is open, it just won't rev as freely, or as high.
