Im in QLD and looking at removing the top section of the rear seat as my audio install is just getting too big to fit in the boot, im looking at adding 2 more subs in place of the rear seat.

What im planning on doing is keeping the bottom section of the seat and keep the seatbelts in the rear. Only removing the top part of the seat to expose the 2 large openings into the boot, I will then block these up with MDF and fibreglass, technically you can still sit on the seat with a seatbelt .... not that I ever carry passengers

is this legal to do ?

I have hear numerous stories about not being able to remove seat belts and the seat totally without getting it compliance as a 2 seater car but as long as there is a seat and seatbelts in place it can stay as a 5 seater

i think that will be one of those situation where is depends on the cops mood on the day, yes you still have a seat and your seat belts, and i would be very shocked if there is a law saying you have to have foam seats,

but... you have or intend to modify your seat, so if you get a ****ed off cop, i dont think he would have any dramas defecting you

just rego the car as a two seater but that means you have to remove all the rear seats and belts

I don't think legally it would be able to stay as a 5 seater unless you had an engineers cert. but as naf said, its up to the cop

I wouldn't be touching the seats if I were you. The cops will take you to town. Your only option is to do the mod and then get it engineered, thats the only way you will be able to satisfy a cop.
I would call an engineer before you even start.

why bother? how important is a stereo to you that you need to butcher your interior to do it, and to risk defects from it. not to mention your audio stuff will be on display to anyone that looks into your car. plenty of show car setups manage fine without removing the seat
