    Default Power steering cooling

I dont drive my car for more than 30 mins usually but ive noticed on 2 separate occasions recently when I drive for longer than that my Power steering makes funky noises at low revs.

I checked out the fluid tank today and the fluid coming back in was actually boiling, this is after a full flush and clean approx 2-3 weeks ago.

    now cooling options .......

what is there that is on the cheaper side, ive had a look at the auto trans coolers at supercheap but they seem to be a bit on the pricey side ? I think they were around $150 for a small one?? seems pretty exy to me

I was thinking of using a heater core or something similar or are these not suitable?

is there a cheaper option than the ones at supercheap?? I would prefer to go new rather than using something like a heater core

    any advice is welcome!

    update:

after trolling these forums for so long.... people say you can get the PWR kits for around 60-70$ although they arnt saying where and I didnt want to dig up 12 month old threads

iif that is the case I would get 1 for the auto and 1 for the ps just to be safe ( if I can find them )

Id be more inclined to figure out why its boiling. Id say the boiling is a sign there is something else wrong, maybe even the wrong fluid has been put in?

I think its a side effect of when I had an accident and some water got into the system, I will reflush it and put a cooler on it, I found a decent sized one as well 15" x 5" and 1/2" thick for only 90 bucks with all the mounting gear + fittings

if it's making noises at low revs it suggests the pump is getting tired and it's been overloaded. normally a worn pump first sign is it moaning when you first start it up and it's cold. when warm it normally goes away.

i'd have a look at the presure line from the pump to the rack. sounds like it'sgetting some extreme pressure causing the heat. maybe a pinched line? check the rack for damage also.

i run a small cooler and the fluid in mine only ever gets warm. my VN is still on it's original pump (89 but only 129,xxxkm's), no moaning or groaning at all. i did however run it on stock wheels for many years same as the original owner. i believe wider wheels put a greater load on the steering and is one of the reasons pump run hot/fail sooner on later model cars (they all use the same basic pump but in a slightly different configuration)

lol I think you're seeing things if you think it is boiling.
It is more than likely 'bubbling up' in the reservoir from the return line.
While I'm not saying it doesn't get hot, but that fluid would have to get crazy hot to boil.

Possible alternative- tranny coolers from wreckers. Cooler from Pajero & magna are a compact, thicker unit which may be suitable. I imagine it will only go on the return (low pressure) side......

sorted it today, ran the power steer fluid through the factory radiator cooler and the tranny through the new aftermarket cooler seems to of fixed the problem.
