Hey guys,
Just thought id uno go outside today, nice and sunny, follow a howto guide and remove my extrerior side door trims, the black lines. But things never go the way you plan *sigh*
I followed the heating AND fishingline howto guides and prety much didnt turn out nice at all. Bits of paint came off and i found a bit of rusting under the trims, GREAT!...not.
So because my car is sitting under a carport not being moved cose the engine is done for, i might aswell consider the whole car a project. I was thinking of maybe a colour change because ive always wanted that VYSS green like 88GreenVN's car. So i just want to get a round figure on pricing, what i can do to cheapen it up and any good sprayers in the Adelaide area. The car is currently white and im only after an EXTERIOR sprayjob aka, them not spraying the engine bay and the underside of the boot (if thats what appens)
Thanks Guys all help appreciated![]()
It depends how much you want to spend. I've seen cheap 2-pack resprays start to fade and peel after only three years.
Depending on how much "orange peel" you're willing to put up with in your spray job, you can pay anywhere from $1000 to over $10,000 for a closed-door respray. Ask around and see what comes up![]()

whats orange peel lol?
Im willing to do al the prep work, sand it right back to the primer, just mainly need the basis of what a decent job price is, has anyone had their car sprayed, what colours look better / are worth it, ive read that it tends to go cheapest white then to black and then to metallic colours at the priciest.
probably need a guide i suppose haha, im reading up on people that have done a car paintjob for under $100 :\ thats nuttas. But does look good...
Silvers at windsor gardens did my car, great workmanship and one of the nicest family run shops out there. It was an insurance job but they treated me like a full cash paying customer.

Full 2pack respray Orion silver i think. VT silver. Cost was $3000 roughly but thats for everything.

hmm ok kool, im really heading towards a standout colour, something someone wud go, sh*t havent seen a vn that colour b4, but my heart is still in the VY SS green, its a metallic sort of colour so it will obviously cost more.
Has anyone here done a DIY job, im looking at a site atm;
moparts: paint job on a budget!?
its american/canadian but this guy painted his car with Rustoleum / Termclad (enamel/acrylic paint) and the type of paint it is, is alot easier to apply, can be done with a ROLLER and dries overnight and levels itself out nicely, is cheap and can be put straight over other paint without priming, its one cheap alternative for sure...
what you guys recon?
paint jobs is a get what u pay for sort of thing. The only way to save money is to do it yourself or have a mate in the area that can do it cheap. I wouldn't recommend rolling paint onto your car

i suppose its a learning thing, il hunt down this brand and see if us aussie either have it in stock, or an alternative with a diff name, either way i might just give this a shot, cmon whats the worse than can happen...ok dont answer that lol, i guess i can always sand it back again for a proper paintjob..
Personally, I'm a big fan of white. Don't change it![]()

thanks for the enthusiasm MEANVYbasically, i just gotta hope i keep the ends of my fingers intact for all the sanding i will have to do, i have a carport, the front is a wall, right side is a wall but behind and left are fairly open, im wondering if it would b a problem working on my car under it :S what you recon?
My opinion is if your not going to paint the insides it's going to look silly, especially if you choose a stand out colour. You'll have old white paint on the inside of the doors, pilars, engine bay and boot and a really nice standout colour on the ouside and that looks really dodgey.
If you prep the car yourself and have never done it before, you're wasting your money. As any panel beater will tell you, it's all in the prep work. Like anything, without experience, you'll most likely stuff it up .
Best bet is to have a mate who's in the know, help you prep it at home. You can then go and hire a professional booth & bring your own gun (if it's not provided by the hirer).
Your mate can do the spraying.
I did this and choose to stay with the original colour (So I didn't need to do the insides). Preped it at home with my mate and then drove it to a spary booth and had my mate spray it for me. The Panel beater, who rented me the booth, got so involved talking to us, he ended up steping in and took the gun off my mate and sprayed half the car for us (free) just to show of his skills.
6 months down the track some idiot in a Merc ran into the back of my car and screwed it all up!
How much was it hiring the booth?
Obviously your mate only charged beers to help with the prep work yes?

It was almost 6 or 7 years ago. I have a bad memory but think it was in the area of about $130 for about 3 hrs. The Panel beater had some quiet time in his business and so wasn't fussed about us using his booth for a little while. We bought our own gun and paint. I installed a body kit aswell and had everything ready to go. Only thing I had to do onsite, was to tape it up and cover all parts I wasn't going to spray. I gave the rear wing of my body kit to my mate (not a fan of wings). I always help my mate out when ever he needs it so he was just returning the favour. The panel beater also had a cheap spare compressor which he sold to my mate.
Very good learning experience for me. I only wish I had documented and photographed everything.
