ive been reading a few threads and i was just wondering if someone could tell me why exhaust tips are so expensive
well i got twin dumpies on mine, costed $70 fitted at ABC Exhaust. I dont know about you but thats not expensive really
I think its because its an accessory and not really "needed"
If you want it you must pay![]()
Yup. They're an accessory, and people WILL pay a lot for them. So they can charge a lot.
Just like alloy wheels. Really flashy ones cost a LOT more than tyres, even though the tyres serve more function.

I dont really think theyre that expensive, I paid $120 to install and slightly modify twin 2.5" chrome tips, and i had no hesitation in paying that price.
I think you guys need to try and replicate some of these tips you are complaining about and then you might have an new found appreciation for the cost.
i got a tip put on for $20... tip cost me $40, i rekon it was well worth it
It's because they give you an extra 20hp, everyone knows that

lol like $60 for stainless steel that has to be shaped, welded, precision cut and polished or chromed to a mirror finish?
I don't see how a $60 exhaust tip is any more or less of a rip off than any other peice of the exhaust system, or anything in the automotive industry for that matter.
How does it being cosmetic effect what it should sell for?
So your entire exhaust is stainless then or it somehow turns into stainless steel at the end without utilising an exhaust tip?
being cosmetic is the reason why they retail for so much. it doesnt cost them nowhere near as much to make them. as others have said, if you want it you will pay. thats why they are expensive
vt's come standard with stainless exhausts. mines streight to the end with no tips. ive just hit it with polish until i replace the exhaust. and yes i will be paying a decent price for a tip
Well, this is an interesting thread.
Chrome exhaust tips and stainless exhaust tips are totally different animals.
Why would you choose a material that can remain corrosion free to make a tip out of then chrome it? lol
VT exhausts are made out of S/S, but it's not crap. It's also funny how most people remove a stainless exhaust and replace it with a mild steel item. I've mentioned this before, but it's mainly because of cost, secondly, mild steel systems are usually made of aluminized tube anyway, so corrosion protection is quite good.
In the theme of the thread, on not a big fan of 'tips', I beleive that what sticks out at the back, should be all the way through, if you choose to make it S/S on the end, then kudos to you. I made mine 3" mandrel all the way, painted matt black for stealth lol.
How much do you think it costs to make a set of extractors, or some simple 2.5" pipe, or a muffler? None of them cost anywhere near as much to make as they sell for and they're not cosmetic. There has to a be a profit on the item and a profit needs to be made by the company that makes the steel, the company that makes the tip, the company that transports it and then the retail company that sells it. Its no more of a rip off than any other automotive part. Just look at the crazy mark ups on car audio etc.
imo extractors are expensive because they give you the extra horses (you cant tell me their not expensive lol) but their worth every cent.
i dont think people are getting ripped off with the tips though but they are quite expensive for what they are.
transport and profit ect... is also another reason they cost so much.
