Ever wondered what happens when a car fitted with LPG is torched?
Yeh ok, it's pretty obvious.. But without going into detail, I thought I'd share with everyone here a little incident that happened last night bout 300m down the road from my place. Woke up at 4:15ish when a huge shockwave shook the sh*t out of our house.. On the way to work this morning I found out what caused it.. see pics below.
On a very serious note though, I talked to some neighbors around the car this morning, and when one of them phoned the Fire Brigade to report the explosion, they told her someone had already phoned in the fire about 10 mins earlier.. Now think about this; what if the poor person who phoned in the blaze had then attempted to put the fire out and had been standing nearby when that tank erupted?
... Makes you wonder what the hell some people are thinking.. there's some real pond-scum floating around Adelaide's streets in the wee hours..
Gotta feel sorry for the chap who now has a charcoal sardine can for a car..
Edit: found this article today too.. LOCK YOUR CARS AWAY!

someone sole a car did the same thing put it out front of my mates house he lives near a school part of the tank i think it was went through his parents bedroom front window and the hood believe it or not landed in the middle of the school
And suppose these mindless idiots get caught for it, I bet they only get charged with 'illegal use of a motor vehicle', and possibly arson.. They know it too. A slap on the wrist and off you go, it's crap.

Jeeeeezarz!!!!!!!!!
I wonder why the roof went backwards?
Gas tank in boot... Yet the roof went back towards the boot? And the bootlid is still on. Pretty odd.
the rear of the roof has most metal though but you think the boot would'nt still be there lol.
someones gotta do it.... It'll buff out![]()
its this kinda stuff that makes me not wanna install gas.
nomatter how safe you think it might be, your still riden in a timebomb
HAHAHA.
The fact is the tank would have been pretty full to do that and would have been in full flame for quite some time. The tank should relieve pressure (gas) untill it is empty and not explode.
There are many fail safes in gas tanks nowadays, and I think something went wrong with this one to explode like that. I have seen plenty of videos of tanks in cars that are on fire. They will just pump the excess gas pressure out the pressure relief valve untill they are empty. I think this ones welds may have not been up to the task, but like I said this tank would have been enveloped in full flames for quite some time before this happened, giving everyone plenty of time to get the hell outta there.
Have you ever seen what happens when a pressurised petrol tank explodes?
Its not real pretty either. All pterol tanks nowadays are sealed so they heat will pressurise the crap out of them and then when they finally let go they tend to go boom pretty good too.
But admittedly not as big as a LPG tank boom.
I'll vouch for this particular one.. It was one BIG boom..
I seems the side of the tank that let go was facing inwards through the back seat, releasing the explosion forwards through the cabin. The rearmost pillars pretty much sit directly above the tank so I'm guessing they didn't cop the initial force? The bootlid was pushed upwards about 8 inches in the centre (photos dont show it well) but I'm surprised it didnt let go too.
Notice how the inertia of the roof flying open/backwards was enough to twist all the rear pillars and window frame inwards! :my:

The tanks won't release pressure quickly enough with immense heat because gas expands so much, so fast. In an open environment you let an LPG fire burn as it will safely burn off the gas, but in an enclosed environment like the boot of the car its very dangerous because of the heat being generated... And any gas that is released is released into a confined atmosphere anyway.
wow, that got tore the **** up!
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
