Just wondering if many people have been pulled over with 19 and 20 inch wheels and the cops have asked or defected you about not having the correct load rating on your tyres?????
my mate got done about 3 days ago i told him and told him didnt listen though![]()
did he get a fine or just a defect??
Nope, been told they were illegal for being an illegal size, changed his mind when I showed him my manual that said they were standard.

thats the problem with cops, the system works on the basis that every cop knows all the laws when i practice most know jack **** and it's left up to you to prove em wrong which 99/100 means you gotta pay for a inspection of somesort
when i bought my new treads forthe VN last month i was originally gonna get some nangkangs NSII treads but the guy at the tyre outlet actually said that they weren't rated for the weight of a commodore.

ive heard of a few people doing the good old ebay placard going up 2 sizes..... but i honestly dont see how that can work when they pull over commos all day and tyre size is the only thing mr plod knows about
SIR LS1
the two ton go kart
good question, what load rating ? I checked my vs, the RE92 are rated 95, and the goodyear ducaro's are rated 94. not sure what the minimum is. Anyway, i think it is illegal for a tyre fitting shop to fit tyres below the minimum load rating for your car. you really don't want to do this anyway, cos blowouts can be real scarey !!
Not at all, I asked if he would mind if I showed why they aren't illegal, was never once a smart arse about it. Had he opened my bonnet I was ****ed anyway. So wasn't worth being smart about it.
Also told him to check the tyre placards and then match them to the cars manual He quite liked the idea that he could fine people for illegally changing the placard without an engineers report![]()

In WA, because I am a WA cop, you can go up two sizes on wheel size.
If yr vehicle comes out standard with a 15 inch tyre, then you can go to a 17 inch.
If your car comes out with 18s then you can go 20s. Just show the cop the size tyre the vehicle came out from the show room floor.
Some vehicle manufactures put on bigger tyres as an option, so that does not mean you can go two sizes bigger, because its an option from the manufacture.
But I am pretty sure vehicle such as VE SS commodore come out with 18s as standard so you can go bigger.
I was always under the impression the rim size is irrelevant (the rolling diameter should be the same - increased rim size = decreased tyre profile), it's the tread width that matters?

Now I use the two sizes up rule because its an easy tool to use when looking at thousands of tyres, but I can use a myrid of other tools available to me.
If I am in doubt about your wheel size, then I let you go and find out later from the professionals, so if the same situation comes up again in the future I have the necessary knowledge to make a informed decision.
I am constantly learning new things each day in relation to vehicles and laws. The day I stop learning is the day I hang up my badge.
that is correct if you go after market, but if you get bigger wheels from factory, holden send your car to hsv and they fit the wheels and the new placard for the wheels
so if you got 20's on the ss factory you could then go 22's legally
no you could only go 20's legally but if the 22's fit you could, but you'd driving "illegally
Chev badges are an instant fail
haven't had this before, but been asked if id had a drug test before, i said no and the cop asked if i had one would i pass, i said yes id pass and he said ok, and let me go without testing mei don't think he could be bothered going back to the bus to get a test strip.
my mate was a smart ass and copped it they were out one night him and another guy at maccas hes got a stock vs 'ss other guy old ladies shaon wagon. as the cop was lookin at tyres etc couldnt find anything wrong and the owner my mate of the vs'ss kept sayn found anything yet told u there was nuthing to which the cop ripped out his baton and smashed his back light out and had the nerve to say now theres a problem lol and defected him for broken tail light. took it court and lost sucks to be him.

About time you guys over there on the other side of the planet adapoted the federal standards surely, it's been years since the new wheel recommendations came out.
The craziest thing I've ever been asked when pulled over is. Do you have a gun license?, no. Do you have a gun?, no. I still can't imagine why I randomly got asked that
Here's the federal guide that most states follow, I'm not sure if South Australia use it yet but they were suppose to by now, seems WA does not yet know it exsists
