Its up you if its a good first car, what do you like/prefer?
If there mechanically sound they will be a good car if looked after.

As for what you can do to it.... I suggest leaving it stock with the new P-plate laws you will be stuck with. No modifications are allowed, so everything you do will have to be cosmetic, and becareful you dont want it looking rice.

yeah there a good first car if have been looked after and they go kinda hard and r fun to drive, and most of all if u smash it its just a vs, and they do pretty good skids to (legally of course) "wink wink". so go for gold.

I suggest that whatever you get, keep it standard, don't worry about what your mates or others are doing with their cars. Your biggest priorority is to gain some driving experience, refrain from any traffic offences, avoid situation where your vehicle may be subject to defecting and try to stay alive. Its' the least you can do - you owe it to your parents.

id go for wateva is more mechanically sound. VS's are great cars and easy to drive. make it look neat n tidy, i wouldnt go any further while on P's or you'll start to attract too much attention.

    best of luck

Which type is more suited to your needs. Thats the way I looked at it when I was buying my car. Given they are both neat and tidy both engine and body/interior wise, go with which ever one you feel more inclined to want. Thats my opinion. I was set on buying a VS wagon, but then thought that subs or anything else in the boot is open to everyone walking past to look at. Of course there are ways around this but meh lol.

yeah, VS is a good car but starting to get a little bit old now ( I mean not new any more... but not old ). If the engine, box and body are good the rest is easy to fix and parts are cheap.
