Hi everyone. I was wondering if there are any panelbeaters out there that can give me some advice. I own a VU 2002 SS ute which was involved in a front end collision. It was written-off but NOT a statuary write-off so I bought it back from the insurance company. It has bent chassis rails and drivers side strut tower so can panelbeaters replace or repair that sort of thing? I am in Canberra so what are the rules about getting it through rego again when the repairs are done? I have the opportunity to buy another vehicle with not as much damage as mine (another write-off) with a slight bent strut tower and a buckle in the rails so is it a matter of course that you can swap the parts by welding the new one on...and then putting it on a car-o-line? Cheers and thanks in advance.
yer front the fire wall forwards (strut tower casing) has to be removed as well as the the rad support, then it needs to be put on a rack to have the rails straightend and new towers welded in as well as rad support, quite a big job though...
So do I have to take the motor out? And where do I go then for a rego r/w certificate?
yes motor has to come out to straighten the rails.
i'm not sure what the ACT equilevant is, but in victoria if a car is written off, after the car is repaired you need to obtain a VIV certificate, and all the repairs to the car have to be documented with photo's and fixed by an approved RTA agent.
once you have the ACT equilevant of that, you then take the car to get a RWC or i think you guys use a blue slip? and then you can take the car to be registered.
To give you an idea of the cost... this was 15K damage on my ute which also needed a chassis rail replaced.
