how to tell if shocks are buggered

hey guys.

i pulled some shocks out of my vn wagon when i had it.


they are in the garage.

how would i tell if they are in working condition without fitting them to the car?


any help appreciated.

if they raise themselves it's a good sign. also when you push them in and pull them out again you should feel constant pressure ie no soft spots, and there should be a fair bit of resistance as you push em in. pretty easy to pull the back ones out of your VR and compare.

ohk. thanks mate. they dont take alot to compress them. my guess is that they are had it.

depends on what type they are too, are they hydrolic or gas?

How strong are you? my niece might say they are very difficult to compress. your looking for a good firm and constant resistance through the entire travel of the shocker.

Remember that if the shocker doesnt compress thats one stiff fricken ride, the springs give that real over all firmness anyway so dont expect the shocker to require super muscle power to push in, generally any 10 year old kid should be able to compress a stocko one, if not by strength then at least with there own weight.

well when i replaced my rear shocks you could push them all the way in and the would stay all they way in, with my new shocks when you push them all the way in they would spring back all the way out

Whether the shocker stays compressed or expands by itself depends on the shocker, some may have some residual tension in them, but that isnt really important, its the ability to offer uniform resistance to constant movement that is important and increasing resistance to accelerated movement that is the key.
