Also, check to see if the sputter-switch is off, you might have left it on. It's mounted behind the accelerator pedal on the floor.
double check all the leads are fitted correctly.

The leads go from the right cap to the right plug. But i was wondering if the leads are wrong being different lengths. Is there any way to tell?
Different lengths won't matter a great deal in your situation, just important that you get the right coil pack terminal connected to the right plug.
Looking at the engine, standing in front of the car:
Front Right: 1
Front Left: 2
Middle Right: 3
Middle Left: 4
Rear Right: 5
Rear Left: 6
You said that when you give it a bootful it sputters. I assume it starts and idles ok, so the leads should be ok so far as being connected to the correct plugs.
You could have a fuel supply problem or faulty electricals. Coil pack has already been mentioned. Other possibilities are that you have installed the fuel filter the wrong way round, (it will be marked with an arrow to indicate front), faulty fuel pump (good luck, it's in the tank - a mongrel to remove without taking the tank out first), faulty fuel pressure regulator diaphragm, dirty injectors.
Get your fuel system checked for pressure delivery and if you haven't done it before, get your injectors cleaned ultrasonically (cleaner probably wouldn't work if the injectors haven't been cleaned for a very long time,)
I checked the fuel filter its ok and the leads there fine. It is fine in neutral you can rev it out and no probs. Someone told me that means the coil packs, I bought new ones, got 2 off and my socket bit **** its self and there is nowhere open 2day that sells them i dont think![]()
check the plugs arnt damaged, or leads arnt faulty.
sounds like what my mums car did when it had a cracked spark plug
Well i got the coil packs changed over and it ran fine for about 10 mins the it started again.
The fact that it ran ok for a short while then started playing up could mean the problem is broght on by the engine reaching its operating temperature. As suggested above, check condition and gap on all plugs. Then, if nothing is obvious, look at the fuel system as I suggested. As your filter is installed correctly, you could be suffering from fuel starvation. The only component which would be affected by heat is the pressure regulator or the injectors. The fuel pump generally just stops operating. Just as a thought, what is your fuel level in the tank at present? If it's low, it could be the pump or a blocked pick up screen.
Did you get this problem resolved?
When you accelerated did your engine make a massive sound like air was trying to escape?
im having the same problem with my vs calais grr! ive changed the plugs, leads, coil pack, and fuel filter and it just still runs like a dog. I when i start it, it idles fine I can rev it out and its fine but after ive run it for about ten mins it start sputtering when i put my foot down to pick up hi revs usually after 1800rpm and its driving me nuts I dont know what to do I think ill jus get the mechanic to have a look at it but if any of u guys know of wat it could be or have had the same problem and fixed it id appreciate the help
cheers guys
Crook ignition module that sit's under the coil packs is a strong possibility.
Also the wiring that goes into the module can play up with age and heat.
Errr think it might be fixed by now . Did you use a back hoe to dig this thread up ha ha ha .
