Default where do you hide your tool box?

Hey guys, iv got a vt spak and im constantly working on things, so i went out and bought a tool box a couple of weeks ago and chucked all my stuff in it and chucked it in the boot, now every corner i turn around or when i brake its scrapping and slamming into my sub box, and every passenger always asks whats the scraping noises. So has anyone got any good spots where the mount them? or how i could possibly hold it down.

Can you put up a pic of your boot? If its in any way similar to my VP, this method should work.

I don't have a toolbox, but i keep a full size trolley jack in my boot. The strap that holds the spare wheel in should stretch enough to go around a small sized toolbox.

You could probably even get a strap from the wreckers, and put it on the drivers side and use it there (which will give you more room!)

i have a tow rope and jumperleads with a 5liter jerry can of fuel tucked into the hollow of the spare wheel, all nicely tucked away under the spare wheel cover. i also keep my work toolbox behind the drivers seat with basic set of spanners, screw drivers, pliers, cutters etc. if you need more then that it's gotta be major anyways.

one thing that is handy to have is a spare hose clamp and some electrical tape. if you ever get a small leak in radiator hose, wrap with electrical tape and then fasten hose clamp over electrical tape and squeeze the hose some. will generally get you home (it's got me home once, now i always make sure my radiator hoses are in good nic)

vt to vz's have a flat boot with the spare wheel under it, so it doesnt have the strap for the spare wheel like steathly suggested.

how many tools are you carrying??? if its reall basic they might sqeeze on the driver side behind the taillight, (same spot as the jack but on the drivers side)

Oh never knew that. Can't say i spend alot of time in late model commodore boots. If i get abducted in one, i'll be sure to take note.

You could probably still make a strap of sorts in the way the VP strap is used.

Does that mean theres room on both sides for subs?

This is the VL one, but its the same as VN/P.
You might be able to make something up like this to keep everything in tight!

thanks for the ideas guys, heres a pic of my boot, and i drew in paint where the bot fits perfectly, just need somthing to hold it there, stealthy's idea with the strap might be the go, on the left hand side where the jack goes, in the big gap off to the side...

Depending on what you want it to look like, you could probably get a sheet of thin aluminium and get it with a bend in it, slide the flat part under the sub box, and the upright part in front of there the tool box would go!

Be careful it doesn't move the opposite way. seem heaps of people with 'outwards' dents from such things.

you could get a couple or 6 of the big pot magnets off ebay and screw them to the floor and put a thin piece of rubber over them.

I guess that's the beauty of having late model cars - the tools stay at home on the garage wall.

My last car that needed a kit of tools on board was an EH with triple SU's in the mid 70's.

If you have to carry tools, you really need to sort out those that are absolutely essential for road-side repairs and reduce the number to the basic essentials. Wrap them in cloth to shut them up from rattling and stuff them in under the spare or around it.

Stealthy - you carry a trolley jack in your boot? That's pretty extreme - do you get a lot of flat tyres or is your car susceptible to break downs?

STEALTHY,tm- is the trolley jack for a little xtra weight in the rear end? lol sorry i have a canvas type bag in the boot i can put i in the opposite side of my spare wheel (early models do have advantages), i would not have thought also, that you would need alot of tools for a vt, better to be safe than sorry. i prob would do the occy strap thing.

Nope, it is because i will NEVER trust a shitty scissor jack to jack up a commodore. The first mod i do to any commodore i buy, is ditch the scissor jack in the bin, and buy a trolley jack

True. Before i knew how hopeless scissor jacks were i used them to raise the rear end so i could get stands under. When i was lowering it the back end went sideways, broke both jacks and one was jammed under the car. Bottle jacks are far superior i reckon.

I'd put some kind of home tower speaker-esque feet that grip on carpet on the toolbox to stop it sliding around, then a light strap around the top to stop it rocking over. Don't bother with velcro, it hangs on too tight after a few kms and you end up leaving the velcro on the floor of the boot.
Check out my VP right 'ere!

I'd probably stick with a small amount of tools wrapped in a cloth, saves having to screw around trying to bolt shit down etc etc... lucky for me my BMW already has a toolkit built into the bootlid.

Hmm, i carry an insane amount of tools. Electric Impact Wrench (needed to change wheels when a rattle gun has been used), 18v cordless drill with spare battery, breaker bar and sockets for it, a multi use tool kit with like 300 "tools" (more like pieces)?, a multi purpose tool (like a leatherman), electrical test light, about 25 metres left of light speaker wire, hacksaw, jumper leads, 5 Litre fuel can and fuel funnel (50 metres of tough rope has been removed for now and hasn't made it's way back). And that's all i can remember off the top of my head for tools. Yes, this vehicle is used as a recovery vehicle for mates vehicles, but it's great having tools for whenever i need them. They dont move around, but with everything else in there too there's not really anywhere for them to move.

I would say whatever you need you should have with you. If it's not many, then look at securing them together in a corner, if it's a few place them all together so they can't move, or use straps to keep them all together.
