Some people have asked where to get a manual for there commodore. Please note that Gregories no longer does their manuals we have all been used to using.
They have now onsold (or something) to Haynes.
try www.haynes.com
here is a list of their manuals
41740 - '78 thru '85, VB, VC, VH & VK with 2850cc, 3300cc
41741 - '86 thru '88, VL with 6-cylinder engines
41742 - '88 thru '98, VN, VP, VQ, VR & VS with V6 & V8 engines.
41743 - '97 and '98,VT with 3.8L V6 and 5.0L V8 engines
Non of these include info on LPG so don't buy them if thats all you need.
Local repco stores or autobarn or supercheap should be able to order these in for you.
Regards to all Guy.
120 in a 100 zone.....Sorry officer....I thought you where trying to give my wife back!!!!
I have a Max Ellery manual, the worst mistake I could have ever made was purchase one of these.
The next car manual will either be the Genuine Holden manual or Gregories without any questions at all.
The Max Ellery manual is hopeless, any diagrams I have been after so far have always been for the V8 or simply no diagram at all.
i have a holden engine manual and a gregories one for my VN. the gregories is good because it gives you lots of tips that the holden one doesn't, as they assume you're a hardened mechanic. but the holden one has more info.
i got the Max Ellery manual , fellow at the shop swore it was the best one . i found it totaly lacking in info re the calais . bare a few mentions here and there .
whats the best for a Vk Calais ?
cheers

sometimes you can be lucky and find orriginal workshop manuals for some commodore models. I saw one for a VK and a VR a while back. They are pretty masive and include everything as they would being from the Holden workshop.
-= WAGEN3 =-
Yep you can't beat the original workshop manuals, but with 12/13 per model @ roughtly 50 bucks a piece, you really have to get the ones you will use and that's about it.
Repco have Haynes mauals for $29.99 on special at the moment. There not a bad manual.
Manual?!? Harden up.

I have both the Max Ellery and the Gregories manual for my VL and the gregories has to be the better one by far, the Max Ellery one lacks diagrams and better instructions. Also the car they used for pulling apart was an absolute shitbox, you can see scrathes and dints and grime all over the thing even though the pics are in the black and white.
I use the factory manuals but only selected ones as the complete set are too exy the ones from kmart etc are too vague and show typical examples that could throw you when doing the job.
I go to the library ..sometimes they have the factory books and you can photocopy the pages that you need and keep them in a folder for later reference.

Now I would like to know why there has been over 100 people look here but only 20 of us have said what we own so far as a manual is concerned. I know some people have looked a number of times but............
I'm just interested in teh facts because at least If we know whats out there it will help solve some problems.

120 in a 100 zone.....Sorry officer....I thought you where trying to give my wife back!!!!
Genuine holden workshop manuals can't be beaten for tech info and specs, the only drawback is price. A new set for a VL vols. 1-5 will set you back $150. But as I say the info contained within is extremely detailed, providing you know what your problem is to begin with!! But then again that's where you guys come in.

Hey markovr what library has the workshop manuals?
Where can you buy a set of the workshop manuals anyway? Direct from holden??
Nah try a second hand automotive book store.
If your real keen I know of a place in Melb and Sydney that have them in stock
PM me if u want the number/addy.
THey will mail out if u have a C/C.

It counts both members and visitors. Visitors can't have a say. I get the impression there are alot of members that are a tad shy to have a say, or perhaps are fine with sitting in the background watching the action. Some are probably scared they will say something stupid and get a strip torn off them, silly really but then there has been at least one total moron I can think of, no names mentioned.

If you have a Sunday market in your area there is normaly someone there that sells the repair manuals secondhand. Expect to pay a bit for one though, this is because most people don't get rid of theirs unless they sell the car or dye.
This is where I've bought most of mine. In the trade its handy to have a few of them for the different cars, Mind you when you only keep a car for six months at a time, like me, they become very handy.

They carry most manuals incl. genuine holden.
I would reply if I had something to say, however I don't own a manual, but have been thinking about getting one, so I'm taking careful note of this topic!
i got a VN, but I bought the VP manual because they were having a speacial at K-mart for $20 and they ran out of VN manuals. but i think it is pretty much the same with very very small differences

Hey death from above I am in Brisbane and the state library at south brisbane has a full set of factory manuals for a vn that share a lot of parts with a vr .
I just photocopy the pages I need at the time.
The library also has the gregory type manuals for other models
The few factory manuals I have aquired are from ebay or swap meets....they are too exy to buy from gmh although they are still available.

I have a Gregory's for my VS and it's enough for what I get up to these days. Nothing compares to the factory jobs though. I feel they are worth the extra $$ if you are a serious tinkerer and have to re-build a basket case, plus there are update supplements with info on recalls and stuff.
Hey, is there anywhere on-line we can go to check Commodore re-call info?

Hi all,
Following a gentle prod from jetspin_vl I thought I'd take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name's Mark and I live in the southeastern suburbs of Melbourne. I own a manual 3.3L VC commodore, and a VSII V8 Statesman. I do all the work required on the commodore, but give my trusted mechanic the statesman. If you're wondering why I still have the VC (Bombodore according to my wife), it was my first car and I will never be separated from it. My plans in the next few years are to put a 304 EFI V8 into the commodore with full leather interior, doing all bodywork/rust repair and mechanical stuff myself (electrics might be a tougher ask!. I've gained a tremendous amount of information needed for my project from this forum and a few others. My hat is off to all the forum experts, I am in awe.
On to the topic: I own the Gregory's manual for the VC commodore, extremely comprehensive and for a novice like myself great for learning. The only hassle I've had with it is when attempting to remove the upper dash the manual will be extremely comprehensive for removing ancillaries for 25 steps and then say "Remove dashboard". Or for the steering wheel, "Using suitable puller, remove steering wheel". It's a shade harder than that!!
Cheers,
Mark.

Just wanted to say welcome to Demons1964. So Hi!!
I have a few workshop manuals and even though I've got a mechanical background I can still find them a bit daunting and sometimes just don't cover exactly what I want anyway. The aftermarket manuals usually give enough info on the most likely jobs THEY think you might tackle, but heven forbid if you need to work out the vacuum lines on something!!!
Also jetspin_vl I would like to say thankyou because its been quite a few posts since I joined on I had compleatly forgotten that there are people who come and don't actually sign up, now why would you do that...huh. With such a great site as this I find it hard to believe that you would not sign up...but anyway....
