hey guys,

just asking how much a basic respray ( for a 1987 vl commodore executive ) would cost ??

im planning to spray the car black and respray the front and rear bumpers silver. ( for the front and rear bumpers im not talking about a fancy silver, im talking about the common silver )

Your probably going to be looking at about at least $3-5k for a full respray.

Depends mate, you can get a cheap respray from 1500 but in a few months expect it to bubble/peel/fade you get what you pay for really. For a decent job you are looking at 3k+.

I used to be an apprentice spray painter, Ive seen cars that have costed 10k to paint, to 1k to paint and the difference is obviously huge, it all depends on what you wont. When you pay cheap expect, rushed work and cheap products to be used.

Full Respray You are looking at around $3 - $5k for a decent closed door change of colour respray, you get what you pay for afterall.

ok guys im only 17 ok, im not looking for a hardcore super duper "omg look at his car its got a mad paintjob i just want to touch it". i just want it resprayed in the colour black or dark blue. when u say " u get wat u pay for " i dont understand because i dont know much about spraypaint.

so yeah when u say u get wat u pay for, wat do u mean? will it look shit? will it be rushed? will the paint flake 2-3 months down the track? coz i have no idea about spraypainting.

if you want to change the color of the car then it will need the door jams and engine bay done which is alot more expensive than simply repainting the exterior.. for 3 grand you can get the exterior painted only, and have it done properly not dodgy.

ok well the car is silver, if i get it resprayed silver just the outside not the engine bay or the door jams. will it still cost me 3k? or could i be looking around the $600-$800 mark?

if you want to spray it yourself your looking at 600-800 bucks.. but you also have to have your own spray gun, compressor & heat lamps..

Theres a thread in the how to section in regards to painting your car with rollers, looks good but would take alot of arm work sanding wise, you would be sanding for the prep, then ALOT of sanding after the paint work is done to smooth it out.

you could get it done by a panel shop for 3 grand with a few clear coats as well, thats how i would do it as you need experience and lots of heat lamps when laying clear

hey mate just got my vr painted in ford bionic blue it cost me 1350 but me and a family friend who is a retired panel beater primed and did all the prepping also i got it painted at the place he use to work so i got mates rates there. if you are in melbourne there is a place in bayswater called europaint who offer 900 paint jobs for commodores or tho it will prob end up costing around 1500. im not recommending this place but it just seems that your on a budget and they will do a halfe decent job just wouldnt expect it to last for years or be anywere show quality.

um.......if u havnt been told already, black is the hardest colour to spray, it has a mirror finish on it and dints look like sh!t and ripples look like dints if the panels dont line up its way outa line, if they do line up its coz u have lots of time, and know how/or your car is fairly new.
prep it your self and u void all warrenty, save a few bucks, if its your first car and its not going to be your last then the cheaper option is probably worth it. other wise.....do it once...do it right
