Default how are people getting such good km's from their tank?

    hey all,

I read in another post here that people are getting 800-900+ km's on their DTE reading on their trip computer... How are people getting this? The best I've ever had was 740, which I was stoked with, but people are getting more without doing anything (engine wise) to their car...

My car's fuel economy seems to have gone down since I've had my exhaust put on, shouldn't it have gone up (got better)? It's a 2.5" Lukey exhaust from the catback...

    Thanks guys

hey mate, well tbh if ppl are getting 800/900kms to a tank im seriously wondering wat cars they are driving, ive herd of people getting 600kms out of a tank on vr / vs / vt etc, and more with highway driving and another big thing is if it is manual also helps with the fuel efficiency, especially the 6 speeds. but dont get all upset about 740, thats a hell of a good efficiency mate.

ahhkk.. all these technicalities that they don't point out haha..

I was getting 740, but now that I have the exhaust I'm lucky to get a 600 number show up... But I guess I haven't been driving to uni (25km's there and back) every day, so hopefully when it starts up again this year, the driving to and from there will reflect on my fuel efficiency..

to get 8/900k's to a tank is foobar. Dosnt happen for anyone. Maybe if you have gas, use your petrol and swap to gas when thats empty. Then you might get 900k's

sometimes extracotrs, can either be good for city or highway use.. one can be less eco then the other.. then again.. maybe u have something causing your fuel usage..

just a thought mate, goodluck !

I have had 990 km to empty in the senator. It was after I filled up getting an average of 8.9 on the highway. Thats the only way it can be done. The second you get into town, it will drop down. No one actually gets these km's, well no-one that isn't lying out their arse.

Its quite easily possible, but not around town, and you cant have a led foot.
Last week/end I got 797.86 km's when I filled back up it only took 61.52 litres, so thats an average of 7.78L/100kms.
After driving 230km from filling up, the distance to empty was reading 920 to go,(Ive got a photo if you want), but I cbf'd to fill it back up to see if it would would the estimated 1150 km. BUT this was all highway driving. The 797.86 figure, was Sale to Bendigo, but went through the city spencer, flinders street etc, then around bendigo for two days, and back to Sale (with peak hour in melbourne), and a few trips around town here. So there was quite a mixture of driving but mainly highway, so Im quite happy with that figure.
Thats all in the stock V6 Auto VT. In comparison if the car is used for just around town, it gets around 500-550 around town.

we don't have highways in NZ, i.e in 100kms areas, you have to slow down alot due to corners and single laned open roads, I have only been able to get 620kms from my work VX 02 V6 auto, and weve had it since new and its the highest its done, usually (when using work car for work lol) its around 500kms.

Heh, I don't know if it's the same in the south island or not, but when I was in the north island last, I noticed that they seemed to have only two speeds; 50kmh and 100kmh. If you're in a populated area, 50kmh. the other 80% of the island, 100kmh

Maybe those getting high kms are driving country roads... never put their food down and dont stop frequently.

My V6 VX I only got about 600kms max to a tank city driving (without accelerating fast). My V8 VX I only got about 500kms before I put it on lpg.

I did once take the VX into the country on a trip down south. Even thought I didnt risk leaving it until almost empty, the trip computer did got to the high 700kms

Well I've just witnessed exactly what you've all said, long drives make the fuel efficiency much better. I did always suspect it, but now I've seen it. I went to uni today, about a 40-50 km round trip, and my DTE on the trip computer actually went up 10 km's haha , love it.

Yea thats prettu much right, but most of the time you can't do 100kmh for long.

you need to come and play "follow the leader" with me but yeah, we don't really have those nice flat 4lane blacktops that just seem to go on forever here in NZ. my last return trip from auck to rotorua and back to auckland got me 10ltrs per 100km's and the return trip only took me 2 hrs. my best ever was 6.8ltrs/100km's and that was based on fuel used Vs km's travelled and not a trip computer and absolutly no speeding

soem of the guys getting really good numbers are running greenfoam tunes

Yeah most of those guys getting huge numbers 800+ a tank are running VN/Ps mostly 5 speeds with a very lean tune which is easy enough to do on a VN/P not so much on a ecotec (and they live in the country where you are never below about 80km/h)

Only way you can get high figures is if you do highway k's.

Or, you drive around on 1500rpm everywhere, but even then, that isnt going to be as good as on the highway.

I average around 400-450 around town depending how much of a poke i give my car, then when i get out on the highway i sit on about 9L/Hour usage

maybe people are attaching sails to their cars,

couldnt be too hard to get that mileage

my VP V6 Auto was getting just under 10l /100km with 120 kilo in the boot on the highway, thats 650km to a tank, without the weight it would be better. also gotta take into account what size fuel tank they have, some of those people might have long range fuel tanks.

The OP referred to the post where some members were getting 800 - 900 km showing on their Distance to Empty screen, not their actual consumption.

I topped that post with a photo of my VY showing 1020km to empty. I can assure you that I never got near that from that tankful.

Economical driving and the average speed over a number of refills influence the trip computer. I've had over 1000 km to empty showing on three occasions, but the best consumption I ever got was somewhere in the 600's. I just happen to live adjacent to a freeway, in a regional area where heavy traffic is not generally encountered. It's quite easy under those circumstances to get the Trip Computer to register high numbers - unfortunately, they have little relevance to actual consumption.

haha yeah I distinctively remember your post in that thread, very much blew me away. I would have been quite disappointed if my DTE read over 1000 and I only got 600, it'd probably evolve into a competitive thing with my car from week to week lol.

But yes, you did hit the nail on the head with what I originally asked, so thanks .

Am i missing something or isn't a bigger exhaust system MEANT to decrease your economy?

I had a VS V6 and after my standard exhaust system cracked i replaced it with a 2.5" system and the fuel seemed to just pour out the back.

I get around 500 out of a tank on my stocko vz manual ute, but if i fill up and reset it on the highway down a hill with a tail wind the dte will say over 1000. Never had more than 650 tho and that was driving from brisbane to the goldie everyday for work

Is that so? Well I was under the impression that a improved exhaust would increase efficiency...
