Default Is it illegal to drive without seats & door trims?

    Hi Guys,

If i were to remove my passenger and rear seats, would it be illegal to drive without them and what is the penalty? Also what about removing door trims (not drivers door drim though?)

    Thanks,

Door trims? You should be fine. Seats? You require to have them fitted if your car is registered to carry that many passengers. If you plan to drive around without seats for a long time, get it re-reg'd as a one seater car. That's legal.

Spot on morton but seatbelts (obviously the ones for missing seats) must also be removed if registered as a one or two seater

So based on the theories here i could weld up the rear doors and take out the seat register it as a 2 seater and it'd be fine? Or could it still be a five seater even if the rear doors are welded closed?

If your doing it with the SS you will have a problem with the front passenger as it may have side airbags plus the system won't like it if you run the car with out it plugged in. Same goes for the pre-tensioners.

Yeah true about the air bags, will just flash air bag warning though which will need a reset with tech2.

If you get pulled over , you'll probably be cautioned (be nice though) but like stated, it is illegal to have less seats than the number of passenger that the the car is registered to carry.

should be fine, just leave the front ones in as your airbag system is rigged up to them.

as for welding up doors... structural modification = big no no.

removing interior... if u get a dimwitted cop... he will let you off providing you have removed all seatbelts and all holes have been filled with bolts.

Removing the rear and passenger front seat actually does make a fair difference to the performance of the car but still. I've driven around with the seats removed before as have plenty of my friends. Some of them have been pulled over like that but no ones been fined. Anyway to legally 100% correctly do it you need to go to the rego office and have the seating capacity updated not sure about the door trims. I'm guessing that would depend on which safety rules the car has to pass.

Group A/C touring cars still ran door trims (but no deadner, carpet or passenger seats).

As for the original poster just take them out and go, very unlikely you will have any problems

bah I'm sure they still work without the seats in. He's going to stop faster and corner better without the seats anyway so it should be a crash free trip and in the unlikely event it will have less momentum when it does crash
