Default Sandblasting surface rust on extractors

Hey guys, i picked up a set of Pacemaker extractors not too long ago, they have a little rust on down of the end of the headers where it meets the Y pipe and around that area.

I managed to sand off the surface rust with ease, but below that the rust has slightly set into the steel, it's not deep but it's patchy all over the place. Would having these sandblasted then coated with some rust inhibitor take care of this problem for a while? They are obviously going to rust evetually, but i'm hoping this way the sandblasting and rust inhibitor will hold that off for a while so i get a longer life out of them.

    Cheers guys.

IMO what you are suggesting is a pretty good idea but im just not sure that going to all that effort will really last. Rather than a rust inhibitor after sandblasting i'd probably be looking at using a heat proof paint (same pacemaker blue if you can find it) but even then am not sure if that would last too long as the pipes seem to get pretty damn hot around the y-pipe areas, hence why the original ceramic/powdercoating eventually burns off. Having said that I think its still definately worth a shot as anything you do is sure to last longer than doing nothing to them. Maybe try 2000*F heat proof paint.

Waste of time and effort to make them look good for a couple of months. The only coating that lasts on extractors is ceramic. Even high temp paint will burn off after a short period, especially around the collectors.

Ahh ok, so you think just sand off the surface shit and be done with it? They won't eventually rust all the way through will they?

No they won't. A bit of surface rust won't hurt them. Look at a standard manifold, they are rusty and can be 20-30 and even 50 years old, they are thicker material but they never rust through. If it is just looks you are worried about, sand what you can off and paint them with a high temp paint.

Nah couldn't care much about the looks, no one is gonna see the bottom of them under the car, now i know they won't rush through i'll just sand the surface crap off them and wipe em' off and have them fitted.

    Thanks for the info mate

They aren't blue now anyways man, they are already painted black. They WERE blue though. So yeah, may as well keep em' black.
