    Default Fibreglass bonnet illegal?

I have been told by someone that it is as it will crumple much more than the normal one and therefore reduce safety. Is this the case?

Also, if I did get one, how hard is it to repair should a stone hit, or anything bump the bonnet? Is it easy/cheap?

    Thanks

Heard the same thing because they can cause more injuries when they shatter particularly with a pedestrian hit. can't confirm it though.

Shouldn't be any different to repair than a normal bonnet if it's just a basic stone chip.

Why would you want one anyway?

Fibreglass is legal, providing that the original hinges & locks are maintained, & the reinforcements are not comprimised.

Carbon Fibre is the material they are more worried about for splittering rather than fibreglass.

just remember if you have an accident, duck,
or you might get your head cut of with big piece of the fibreglass bonnet coming through your windscreen

This Place apparently sells *street legal* bonnets that have been approved in their state, dunno how different the rules could be in your state...

there is no rule against fibreglass bonnets but i sincerely doubt any are ADR approved, as it costs $100k odd to test them and this is out of bounds for your average fibreglass parts manufacturer.

when modern cars are certified, they are crash tested with the original (steel) bonnet. technically, it could be argued that performance of the fibreglass bonnet is unknown and therefore is non-compliant.

in practice, since there is no actual rule explicitly prohibiting fibreglass bonnets (that i've heard of, which isn't proof of anything i should say), it would take a very keen official to pursue that line and defect it.

with all due respect to our police, some are not vehicle experts. occasionally they might be tempted to try stuff on if it doesn't look right or they are in a bad mood. you can either wear the defect or try and challenge it in court, the latter being a pain in the a**e for all involved and usually not worth the trouble.

There is a law against removing or modifying part of the car that is necessary to meet adr requirements.

There isnt going to be a rule that lists all materials under the sun that the bonnet cant be made of.
