I plan to weld my exhaust in place using a solidox welder. Since im welding near the petrol tank, do i need to be extra careful? is it a good idea?

Why do you want to remove the rear muffler ? The noise inside the car becomes annoying and there is no power gains to be had .

Unless you have a vehicle hoist, I strongly recommend you remove the system to weld it. Just trying to interpret out of your post, you're not solid mounting the exhaust, are you? That would cause you all kinds of issues.
linky:Straight exhaust?
no solid mounts, hangs like it should. a friend just tag welded it in position and we remove it and finished welding it. Since its a 2 piece cat back, unlike stock VN exhausts.

I'm surprised you still have an operational solidox welder. Is it the type that takes the pellets?
its just an arc welder. they also use solidox i think.

Ok. A solidox welder is basically a primitive oxy-acetylene torch.
Solidox welding torch? - Yahoo! Answers
Solidox as the name suggests is colloquially called solid oxygen. It is a compound called potassium chlorate and when it burns it gives off oxygen to fuel the flame. It is a watched chemical now so almost impossible to obtain.
Regular arc welding rods as per your picture are coated in flux which gives off CO2 when it burns to prevent oxidation of the welding pool.
