I need to find a quick cheap way to paint a car.
The car is rubbed back ready for paint,
I was looking at roller painting like Wilso's VN i think it was, but i think that it will take too long
I will be painting out doors and only have 1 week to finish the car (including mechanical work).
The paint doesn't have to be perfect but i do want it reasonable job.
I have all the spraying gear but i have never sprayed outdoors...
the paint will be Off-the-shelf Black but i was hoping anyone could help me out here...
-Hints for outdoor painting,
-time it would take to paint
-what type(acrylic,2pac,enamal,roller paint, etc.) will look the best
-and aprox price on different methods
Thanx all
legally cant paint 2pac in the open must be in a booth.
so that leaves acyril. and if you want it decent put the black back on the shelf as it will never look good and i supose if ur doing at in the open you would really have to lay down the colour let it dry (properly) then rub back to get everything off that has now dried ontop of the paint and then lay the clear coat and do the same then compound the car once its set.
last car i painted took 3 days but that was 2pac and start to finish inc taking apart priming and reassemble.
acyril from supercheap is wat 100 bucks n clear another 100 for 4 litres of each plus tape drop sheets etc...
hope that helps and good luck
cheapest way is to go buy 50 cans of export spray paint and 50 cans of clear.
will look ok for a year or 2 if ur lucky but then will be time to do it properly again
Black will highlight every ding, scratch and blemish on the car that you miss during preparation. It will also show any dirt or dust that settles on the paint during the drying process. Just spraying in the open is fraught with risk - the slightest breeze will see crap sticking to your paint as you spray and the spray can be blown around by the breeze so that your finish is patchy.
You could try spraying the car in small increments (say one side only at a time), to reduce the risk and let you have more time to do a fair job. The car will look like crap for whatever time it takes to finish the job, which could be weeks depending on your time availability, but you would be able to paint part of it and still drive it around.
Some will say that the different areas won't match, and that is true for metallics and some solids, but with black, you should be reasonably safe that the colour will match. Just make sure you mix enough paint to do the whole car before painting any areas, then you just draw from your pre-mix as you need it. Make sure you stir the mix thoroughly every time you use it, before spraying.
I took months to spray an HR years ago, because I stripped each panel off, repaired it, then painted it before refitting to the car. My work space was limited and I didn't have the area to strip all panels and repair them at once. The colour was a solid beige colour. There was no mis-match of colour between the panels when it was completed.
yea if your cars not mint or hasn't been prepped properly or your not that confident with the paint I wouldn't go black, silver seems to be a nice one to paint and white for that matter.
hey mate when i was spraying my vl a panel shop was going to let us use their booth/f*** good spray guns, everything for $350 maybe you could find out a deal like that
Thanx all, the car will be off the road for 1 week to be roadworthied,
the car has been prepped and partly primed but still metal showing.
I have taken the week off work to get it done..
the body is in great shape but still, it will be done outside
I really wanted black but every1 has told me about how crap it will look if done outdoors so now i have to figure out a color,
I want dark to set off the chrome and i like blue so i was thinking something around the vt color "raven blue"
Any suggestions?
Black is the worst for showing blemishes, but any really dark colour will do the same. Raven is almost black with a bit of blue - nice colour but I think the probs would be the same as black.
white,red??
For some reason i just don't like white cars... i dont know why,
I have had experience painting over red...
it was not fun... every coat bleed red... so if i decide on another colour later when it gets done later, that will be a bit**
silver is a possibility but i don't remember seeing many around... any1 got any pics of silver vh's?
matte black

wont last long at all.....
you will be bubbling rust soon because of the bare metal left
you cant expect a good job if you doing half assed prep]
black wont look crap if done out doors
who ever said that dont know much about painting
all colours are the same when painting,
its all down to many factors
air supply - water possibly in the lines
gun set up - too much pressure not enoughm feed or vise versa
your spraying technique - how you hold the gun speed, angle, over lap
prep - which you are lacking, how well sanded, no parts misssed, cleaning of it
area painting - sealed off area with no wind, no dust, too damp, possiblity of raining on etc'
products - choose correct and mix correct and you shouldnt have many probs, but dont go mixing 2pac with acrylic or priming with one and colour with the other
you want a good job it seems but you want to do it cheap, nasty and the lazy way
if you want a good job your going to have to start again and plan it
because your more then likly only going to get a spray can effect currently

I havent got the car yet...
i will go over and finish the prep when it gets here.
I haven't got the space to paint it in shelter so i was looking to see how it will look being painted outside
(i have painted cars in a booth before with acrilyc and they turned out good)
but never painted out doors...
any tips for painting out doors was the question i asked and the car will more than likely be resprayed when i have more time and space so i don't want to spend heaps on it this time but i want it to look good...
a non windy day... hot 4 sure and no rain.. do more then a few coats over a few days... youll probley find it easier to breath outside then inside.. arylic is the way to go for cheap next is enamel.. my bros going with black im intrested to see what it turns out like, im doing red with mine as ive done it before on my vc, but im doing more coats this time around, you learn more from the firsttime.
wit the spray gun, use the one with the canister on the bottom for the sides and the one with the one on top for the roof bonnet boot ...
in saying it would look crap as it will show all the imperfections in the panel as well as everything that is floating around in the air settling in the paint, if it was done in white or a lighter colour it would be far less obvious therfore getting a better finish...
this car was painted out doors bang smack in the middle of the driveway unprotected from the elements and it turned out fine in acrylic
and this one was painted in 3 days start to finish working around the clock basicly in a shed with proper prep work etc. all in 2pak

a darker colour will only show panel work imperfections greater then another lighter colour
but if you look back he was more specific in the painting imperfections
all colours will show paint imperfections as a paint imperfection will stand out no matter what the colour

That was my quote you referred to. Black paint shows EVERY speck of dirt, dust, bugs, moose shit and other foreign bodies that exist, just looking for a nice sticky surface to settle on. Sure, all paint will show the imperfections from airborne contamination to some extent, but black (and other dark colours like Raven), look worse.
I was also talking about the effects of any breeze on your paint coverage, if there are any breeze gusts, they can disperse the spray away from the intended target and create overspray over areas just painted. That was what I meant by a patchy finish. Don't infer I don't know much about spraying, I have resprayed complete cars and restored them from the ground up - I know the dangers.
Other issues to consider that haven't been mentioned - someone said make sure its nice and hot. No - hot panels cause the paint to dry before it hits the panel, leading to a rough and sandy finish. Panels ideally should be kept out of direct heat, and you need to try to ensure that they never get too warm.
Also, humidity. This can kill a good finish. If the humidity is high, don't spray outside, full stop. You will get a milky finish to your paint which won't rub out - you will have to wet rub and repaint when the humidity is lower.
Well now I'm in crap...
The wether is in and there is no way i will even attempt to spray in the conditions forcast.
