    Default Comfort "sports" shock

    Hi Greg,

I have a VZ SS, just ticked over 80,000kms, and I suspect the shocks are the same ones it rolled out the factory with.

They are due for a change, and I'm at a crossroad, deciding wether I just put another set of FE2 in there, or go aftermarket in search of something better.

I'm after something which maintains (or hopefully even improves) on the ride comfort of the FE2, offers better than OEM handling, and hopefully doesn't break the bank.

I realise I might be asking the impossible with those 3 criteria, but figure it's worth a shot.

I've come from a car with Billies, stiffer springs, swaybars etc all round, so I know what I can get with money to throw around, but that's not what I'm after this time. I really just want something a little better than FE2, without going so far as to have to make compromises to comfort. If that costs an arm and a leg then I'll just be going FE2 again.

    Hi mate,

Apologies about the late reply. If you're just after a slightly-better-than-OEM replacement shock, it's hard to go past either KYB or Boge.

    Prices as follows:

    KYB Front $159 each
    KYB Rear $67 each
    Boge Front $140 each
    Boge Rear $69 each

I'd personally go the KYB, but the Boge have a lifetime warranty and are quite a good shock.

Shipping to you would be $22.

    Regards,
    Greg

Cheers Greg, no need for apologies.

I am just after slightly-better-than-OEM, my biggest condition is not sacrificing ride comfort.

Which model are those KYBs you quoted?

Excel G, there isn't any other model of KYB for the Commodore (except for some AGX).

If ride comfort is the biggest concern, maybe go with the Boge...

Cheers Greg, hadn't heard of Boge till you mentioned them. I'll do my homework and get back to you

@Junny, maybe airbags would be good for your situation?

    Hey mate,

Sorry about the late reply! Is your ute a normal ute, or one toner?

Boge's are what I run in my VT.

They're Czech made, and are used by huge european OEM's - specifically Audi and Mercedes Benz.

In My VT with low springs (not super lows) and a full set of bushes and etc, on 17" wheels, I find the ride... stiff. Not harsh, and great on the smotther highways, but rougher roads transmit cabin noise, and can be a bit noisy. It's probably not entirely the shocks fault, but they certainly feel pointed at the stiffer end of the market.

I find the handling with them is nothing short of awesome. I grip like all get out, predictability is high, and there is no residual 'nervousness' on the edge. I can hang the tail out with confidence, and even sideways in the wet i feel positively in control. Again, this is not all the shocks doing.

As with most VT's, they bite back when you pick up grip after being sidewise. I haven't done a camber control kit in the rear, and I think that's part of the reason, but they will snap back on you.

I have no problems recopmmending the brand - they have been faultless.

Thanks for the info Tsunamix, I think I might bite the bullet and go for a set. They'll be running with FE2 springs, which are probably a little softer than yours.

I'll shoot you a PM Greg when I'm ready to put an order in.

    Hi mate,

Sorry about the late reply! I'd still go KYB because they have dedicated shortened shocks to suit. Boge do as well, but they're more suited to low, not super low. For springs and shocks to suit would be $675 for the kit. May also need a 4 pt camber kit, and a Whiteline one of these is $175.

With regards to coilovers, what's your budget?

    Regards,
    Greg
