Okay, I have noticed there is a lot of people unsure of the right fluid to put in there t5 gearbox, so I hope this helps you guys out.

The most important feature of any lubricating fluid is the viscosity.
Lubricants are specified to provide the longest service life of the gear box as a system. This includes gears, bearings, synchros and seals. Failure of any one of these components is considered a failure of the entire system.

ATF for a T5 is really just for the World Class T5 that has a unique sychronizer that gear lube cannot squeeze in to lubricate. The syncros like light oil where the gears like heavy oil. The bearings are fickle too, they don't get any oil if the oil is too heavy.
• The WC T5 has papercone synchros and roller bearings on the speed gears. These tiny rollers need the thin oil for lubrication. They were designed for ATF and work well with it.
• W/C T5's have needle bearings under gears #1, 2, &3.
• The lubricant required for W/C/ T5's is automatic transmission fluid (ATF).dexron111
• W/C t5’s must use ATF dexron111 and penrite Lubrizol
• you absolutely HAVE to run the right fluid in the WC units. If you use gear oil in one of those, it'll ruin the clutch material in the synchronizers. The synchro clutch material is the same as the clutches in an automatic trans, hence the reason you have to use ATF in them.

The non-wc uses brass ring synchros and bushed speed gears. The 80w90 will be fine.
• Many people run ATF in the older trans, but IME, shifting is smoother with gear lube. and if the oil is too light not enough lubricaiton.
• Non W/C T5's do not have needle bearings.
Since non W/C T5's did not have needle bearings, it is assumed that they should use API GL 4 or 5 (75W-90 or 85W-90) gear oil.


Supported facts through research, expert testimony and sound lubrication principles:
• The reason that ATF if specified for W/C gear boxes is to ensure a long service life of the needle bearings - the most likely component to cause a system failure.

• The needle bearings have small passages that make them sensitive to lubricant viscosity.
Small diameter cylindrical rolling elements that operate at high speed need a low viscosity fluid compared with the larger diameter rolling elements such as ball bearings.
Automotive transmissions rarely fail due to the gear teeth wearing out from improper lubrication. It is usually a bearing failure.

The world-class T5 transmission had bearings on 1st, 2nd and 3rd mainshaft gears whereas the non-world-class T5 transmissions didn't. Secondly, the world-class transmissions used tapered roller bearings on the countershaft, whereas non-world-class transmissions used flat (cylindrical) roller bearings. The synchronizers are also quite different: world-class T5 transmissions used 3-piece blocker rings on 1st and 2nd and friction-lined (aka "fiber" or "composite") powder-coated steel-core rings on 3rd and 4th for longer life. Non-world-class T5 transmissions used one-piece brass blocker rings throughout. With these improvements, the world-class transmissions have proven more durable, although both kinds are rebuildable. (Generally, world-class T5 transmissions have higher torque ratings. Many of the non-world-class transmissions are rated for 265 ft-lbs, whereas many of the world-class transmissions are rated at 300 ft-lbs.
To find out what t5 you have you must get the i.d tag off of the side of your gearbox, it should be 1352- then 3 numbers- then 3 more numbers. Then refer to this chart. Note ‘WC’ is listed in vehicle application if your gearbox is world class, if it has not got wc next to it it means your gearbox is standard.

Besides the ID tag, other easy way to identify a world-class T5 transmission


Viewing the input-shaft end of the tranny (with bellhousing removed), the cover for the forward countershaft bearing/support is a dead giveaway. On non-world-class T5 transmissions it looks like a freeze plug, whereas on the later trannies it's a heavier steel cover (marked "Timken" and with a part number). On the world-class models, Borg-Warner recommended Dexron II automatic transmission fluid instead of a regular gear oil. If the transmission has a large yellow and black "use Dexron II only" warning label, it's probably a world-class T5.
you can spot the W/C t5 by the counter shaft (cluster gear) bearing race which is located next to the input shaft. it will have a machined surface with a very slight dished center.

the non W/C bearing race will look smooth and may have a slight bow outward

Hope this helps everyone understand the impotance of the right fluid for your gearbox so you get maximum life and performance out of your t5.

ok.... riddle me this- can i then use auto trans additives to the oil in a wc t5? i.e. clutches slip thus wear and can behave undesirably, thus being corrected with the use of additives (asuming they're usefullness is selfevident and a constant rather than a variable)
