Hello all,

Here is step by step on how to remove and replace the beltline moulding on a VB-VH Commodore. If done improperly there is a good chance you will ruin them. Expensive to replace, very time consuming to fix.

Consulting the factory workshop manual, you will need a special tool, basically a rod with a small, strong hook on the end. I fashioned one out of the clamp from the original glass bowl fuel pump when I replaced it. You could fashion one out of a bit of metal rod that is about 3mm or so in diameter.

So - once you have your hook wind the window down - stick it down the gap between the glass, the door frame, and the rubber seal that is in the chrome moulding itself. Now work it towards the centre of the window. Feel for the edge of the chrome moulding with your hook, and pull up firmly. Moulding should come up a bit. Next, if on the front door, repeat the front edge of beltline rubber; if on rear door repeat under the 3/4 glass. Now do the clip/s at the b-pillar. Should just pop off. Use pliers to take off any clips that might be remaining on door shell.

To replace - place moulding (with clips in it - they slide up and down the inner channel for easy location) on the top lip on the door shell, ensuring it is lined up properly. press down by hand over where the clips roughly are. With moulding half on, tap down lightly with a rubber mallet antil it can go down no more.

Note - if you have the original rubber in your moulding, during removal it will probably break. You can wither buy a new moulding with rubber in it from rare spares, or from elsewhere you should be able to get a new rubber insert. Latter is much cheaper option!
