Just feel like boasting hehe ...First DIY job I have done on a car! (well, ok I lie I fixed the headlights and put new wipers but that doesnt count)
It's far from perfect but it'll do...I mashed the foam a bit as I was putting it back in but not the end of the world...better than it was lol
Some pics!
Original Lining (much worse than it was even last week)

Saggy baggy board out of the car (took some manouvering but not that hard to take out)

Manky yellow foam

Foam crumbs (note my footprint - came after I took it out btw lol)

Clean board!

New lining - not the neatest job but I rushed it

Fitted in the car!

It took me longer to do than I planned because I dicked it up yesterday - basically wasted a 1lt tin of glue because I was originally going to put glue on each side (board & underside of fabric) but didnt have enough...so had to wait until today for Bunnings to open and just painted & stuck it down as I went, probably wont hold as well but I was annoyed at myself so thought bollocks to itThe new fabric doesnt match the visors anymore but I liked the grey more than the kakky beige. If I can be bothered I might just find some suitable light grey paint and change them.
It wasnt as hard as I thought getting it out, it was fiddlier than putting it back in but I guess that makes sense.
Anyway just felt like showing off lol, not that its anything special but a first is a first hehe. The real test comes next weekend when we tackle the other repairs.

Well done, nice post with all the pretty pictures too : )
Looks good, well done, what was the total price for parts?
Total was $75 give or takeOriginally Posted by dodgy
2m of fabric from Daleys $25.90p/m
1lt tin Selleys Kwikgrip (heat & water resistant) from Bunnings $19.15
Elcheapo (5cm wide) painbrush from Bunnings $1.80
Although it cost me an extra because I buggered it up and wasted the first tin of glue so had to buy another![]()
What sort of fabric did you use? My lining is starting to sag and look shit in general (previous owner left cigarette burns in it).
Also, did you put foam back on it, or was it just the fabric stuck straight onto the cardboard?
Gravity is proof that nature keeps getting us down.
The fabric is proper foam backed headlining fabric, the fabric and foam are one piece. If you are in Melb Daleys is in Fawkner (where I got it from) and I also was pointed to Nolans who are in Oakleigh Sth.Originally Posted by mouce

nice job tsimira,we all told you it wasnt very hard to DIY...and now you get that warm satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself and it looks a million bucks better than it did before.
hehe yes a HUGE thanks to everyone who helped me out and also gave me the confidence to do it!Originally Posted by sircruisealotVS
And to return the favour I should list a few of the tips that I found made it easier for me...
1. Once the board is out of the car, before you start scrubbing off the foam, get some stickytape and glad wrap and cover the velcro patches on the back of the board so they stay clean and dont inadvertantly get gummed up with foam (I gummed one up, so learnt that by trial and error)
2. I didnt use a wire brush as I didnt have one (would have otherwise), but I did find that a bathroom nail brush was useful to remove the foam in the corners and tricker areas, and also for getting rid of any smaller sticker bits of foam. (I just used a plastic broom for the rest of it lol)
3. Have help to hold the fabric up and straight while you apply the glue, I didnt and found that at the edges it creased a bit (and once it creases they stay there!)
4. Use a soft clean paint roller to smooth out the fabric as you are gluing it down. It helps to apply a gentler pressure more evenly than your hand can. I didnt try it as I didnt think of it until later, but a small paint sample roller might also work for the tricker area's around the front and where the handles go.
5. When gluing it down, smooth from the inside out and dont apply the glue then lay it down in one go- instead put smaller areas of glue and stick it down as you work along the board.
6. Most importantly, dont drop a huge blob of glue on the floor of the garage, not notice its there and realise you had your bare foot in it as was drying. (lucky it was still tacky so I just now have patches of glue on my foot that I'm slowly removing![]()
)
Other than that just be gentle with the foam backed fabric as it creases and crushes really easily.
toodles!![]()
looks good...well done![]()

Gave it a go today and I ended up gluing the fabric on the wrong side of the cardboard![]()

Still the best way to learn is through mistakes, and if all possible someone elses mistakes. So thanks for helping us all out with that one.

Sweet, looks a lot better then my mates staples! My mums just had foam ripped out and glued on without it and now all you can see is hundreds of little pits in the fabric.
good work! looks awesome
take it easy and if its easy ....take it home!
awesome diy thanks... gotta do this to my sisters vn![]()
I used to a vp series 2 wagon and the hood lining was falling down on it so i tryed many things to kepp it up eventually it got too bad i was really dreading the job because it sounded horrible but when we got the hood lining out it wasnt actually hard but i might add i had a helping hand lol.
but any way while we had that out it gave me a chance to fix the leaking windows in the far back
the ones in the tail gate area turns out holden dosent put rubbers on them so i put some proper sealant on them lol.
neway we got it all looking godd again stuck it back on and then three weeks later i sold the car to a mate and 1 week of him owning it a guess what the windows started to leak again and then 2 weeks after that the damb hood lining started to come down but my mate isnt worried about the hood lining as it isnt to bad atm but he would like the windows fixed so i gues im just gunna have tp put better sealant on em newayz catch yas l8r oih and p.s i like the new material looks great but make sure it dosent fall down again as vn - vp have a habbit of it

Yeah i did mine about 18 months ago and it's still going strong, it's come off a little bit near the drivers side visor but nothing bad
I wasnt very happy with the original colour so i just went with some black
if the right glue (upholstry heat resistant) is used on the job it should last pretty much forever...you also make sure the two surfaces ( the material and the board) are spotlessly clean for maximum bonding when glued.Originally Posted by Mr Invisible 55
I did the same thing except cost me $10, i just washed the lining in wool wash so it didnt shrink, pegged the fabric to the cardboard, then painted the contact adhesive on bit by bit til i was done, mine looks shmick.
Well done!, i can see many DIY people attempting their linings now, better than the $270 i was quoted without labour costs for a new one.

How did u get the board off the roof? does it just pull down or do you have to lever it with a screwdriver?
