Introduction

There are other re-lining threads on the JC Forum however this is the professional way of re-lining a roof.
No staples, no bumps, no lumps, no sagging just a clean professional look same as factory and if done properly it will last.
Without this professional information on "how to re-line a roof" I have decided to guide you through these simple steps.
This is also a sunglasses holder/light from sedan converted to a wagon but the same principle applies for all roof linings.
Sedans, Wagons, Utes. All cars in fact not just VT VX VY VZ. Some vehicles differ with the fabric used but it is the same principle.

Things you'll need.

1. A can of Selleys Kwik Grip spray adhesive. (or similar)
2. A tube of Locktite fabric/plastic glue. (or similar)
3. A Stanley knife. (the sharper the better)
4. Some cloth tape.
5. A permanent marker
6. New roof lining fabric. (In our case we are converting a wagon to black perforated roof lining) You can purchase roof lining from fabric stores or even eBay.
Roof lining fabric has the foam backing attached to it so there is no need to purchase foam separate.
7. Someone to help you. It can get a little messy and you only get one go at it before it ends up costing you more time and $$$!

Optional

1. Sunglasses holder for conversion

It is also handy if you have a sedan roof lining to cut a template (we did in our case) or you can use the sunglasses holder as a rough guide.

Step 1

Remove the roof lining from your vehicle. Refer to "How to's" within the forum!

1. Remove the old roof lining and foam.
The easiest way to do this is with a kitchen non scratch scourer as pictured (optional) but you can use your hands and rub it.
Be very careful to only peel the lining back and not the fibreglass, the foam will stay on the fibreglass!

It will look something like this.

If you are just re-lining your current roof card and are not converting to a sunglasses holder go to step 7

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 2

Once you've removed all of the old foam and the card is nice and clean
1. Place your template that was cut from the sedan or your sunglasses holder onto the roof card and trace around your
template with your permanent marker.
2. Cut around your markings on the outside edge (If using template)
If you use the sunglasses holder as a template be sure to cut around 2cm INSIDE your markings!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 3

1. Place the piece that you have cut from the sunglasses holder underneath the roof card and trace around it with your marker.

The result will look a little like this.

2. Cut around the outside of your line with your Stanley knife and it will fit nice and snug like so...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 4

1. Using your Locktite or similar glue, apply it to the edges of both roof card and your cut out piece.

2. Pop it into the hole and press until it is flush with the roof card.

3. Smear glue around the join on both sides just to be sure it will adhere as one.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 5

1. Tilt your roof card up so that you can get behind it,

2. Apply some tape over the joins on the back of the roof card like so...
Do not apply tape to the front of the roof card as any bumps can become visable!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 6

This is optional but if you have a template cut out from a sedan, remove the foam tabs from the template and fix them to the roof card like so.
It will help with the final install stability.

The end result should look like this..

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 7

1. Lay out your roof lining fabric foam side up and spray evenly all over with your Selleys adhesive spray.

2. Spray your roof card evenly also.

Wait about 5-10 minutes for it to become tacky, by the time you finish spraying the roof card side it should be ok to start.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 8

With the help of another person (in this case my wife came in handy)

1. Pick up the roof lining fabric and turn it over,

2. place it over the edges of the roof card starting at one end lay the fabric down slowly.

3. As the other person holds their side up, firmly press out the lining on your end making sure there are no creases.
Make your way up the roof card until you reach the end.
Make sure to press in all the dimples and curves of holes and bumps.

The result should look similar to this.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 9

Flip your roof card over carefully and cut around the edges with your Stanley knife.
Be sure to cut the holes in the roof card also

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 10

Flip your roof card back over again and bask in your glory of your new roof lining.
