will be doing this lil project in the near future at last a quire to a problem that many of us pre vt owner's have

Screw the icecream...
Who wants a moustache ride?
I found the spray glue and contacts were not good to use, never held properly, use the selleys glue in the can at bunnings, comes in different size cans, the $20 can lasted me for a couple of roof linings, paint it on in the shade and do middle first then side sections, not thick coats but enough to hold material, works a treat. hope that helps.
k&h adhsive spray works the best i have 40° days and its 80° in the car it holds the best

Ill say it once and ill say it again, most contact adhesives are **** and will not withstand this job. As soon as it comes summer, headlinings are just gonna fall down.
I highly recommend Selleys Kwik Dry Contact Adhesive, it is heat and cold resistant and comes in mighty big cans or smaller cans. for a price from 20-30 bucks. Its a lot messier than contact adhesive but it does the job right the first time. Just dont apply it to thick, have someone help you apply the material evenly and ...
DO NOT PRESS ON THE HEADLINING WHILE THE ADHESIVE IS DRYING
Ive had my headlining up for 6 months now, its still staying strong and its holding a massive emborided lion to the roof as well.
I agree 100% with Grennan, do it properly the first time, take the advice of people who have done it before and save yourself wasted time and money.
Ha, as stated by someone else dont bother with the spotlight spray on. or the K&H spray adhesive, I got this great stuff (Permatex, Body Shop, Heavy Duty Headliner and Carpet Adhesive) $20 for a spray can, adjust nozzle to spray one can for the foam, one can for the fabric.
MY first attempt fell off the next day and that was with the spotlight glue, it said permanant bond, I sprayed both materials too.
I used suede (red) and am currently spraying the interior to match.
Thanks for the HOWTO I would never have tackled this on my own without it.
I managed to finish mine a couple of months ago. Didnt really turn out as well as i wanted it to lol. Too many bumps in the foam etc, and like with most people, ****ty spray adhesive was my biggest problem. I Ended up buying 2 cans and emptied them both on both bits of fabric. Most of it holds, but there is a section near the back that sags a bit, but i really cbf taking it out again and starting over![]()
can you guys tell me when once the sunvisers and handles are out do you just untuck the roof it self or do you have to peel back all the door rubbers and stuff, i looked at the rear quarter panel and all the plastic near the back window loks like it needs to come out to get the roof off, just wondering if yu just untuck it?? Thanks guys
Dont touch the stuff at the back window, youll break it all before you get it off. I removed the visors handles and just pulled the door rubbers down enough that i could slide the roof card, also you may need to take out the plastic bits near the sealt belts and near the front window.
Once you do that, just slide the entire roof card forward, it should be fairly easy to just slide it. Saves you breaking the rear window plastics. Once you do that, figure out which door is easiet to get the roof out of, i used the rear passenger side with the seats rolled down.
do the front plastic bits just come off or are they clipped, i just looked and know how to take off the seat belt ones but not the front plastic bits
the front "plastic bits" on either side that run from the consolt to the roof are held in by clips, best bet is a pair of LONG! pinty nose pliers, you will break your clips if you are not 200% carefull.
and then you will end up roaming the wasteland of holden wreckers for weeks alone, stranded in a world without clips that arn't broken like I was![]()
EXCELLENT GUIDE MATE!! A+
i registered to this forum purely to say thanks for the step-by-step guide.
i have a vs wagon with the same problem.
i fixed it and re-installed mine all in a few hours.
i purchased a 4l tin of contact adhesive from bunnings, used about 3/4 of it.
i purchased medium thickness fabric - almost like carpet from Laverton market (VIC). i purchased about 4m, and had a bit left over. i didn't pre cut the shape. i stuck the fabric down over the board, then cut the shape around the board later. i cut it a bit larger, then wrapped it around the edges to the back, and glued them in.
the whole board is now a lot thicker, but the rubber around the doors and trims still covers the edges. looks fine.
a tip for the glueing with contact adhesive - spread the glue nice and thick on BOTH surfaces, and leave to rest for about 2 to 3 mins. then stick the 2 surfaces together. once the glue starts to go off, it sticks much better and stronger. just make sure you're sure about the position you stick it, because it doesn't come off very easily after that! this especially useful when wrapping the fabric around the edges.
I didn't spread glue on both surfaces when i layed the main fabric on the side you see in the car. therefore I encountered some bubling up. but once the glue started to go off, i kept pressing down the fabric to the board and it eventually stuck.
CAREFUL WHEN REMOVING PLASTIC TRIMS - I WAS TOO ROUGH, AND I BUSTED A FEW.
WELL DONE MATE - THANKS!!!![]()
thanks for the kind words diablous77.... i dont get to check this page as often as i like. but when i read stuff like that it makes me smile.![]()
thanks guys
i dont think i had a ford badge. any one else ?
na, cant say I ever noticed a ford badge or wording anywhere, if I did I would have cremated her in the drive way, lol, but all bull**** aside,if you can change a spare wheel or wipe your arse yourself you can can do a roof lining, dont need to be a rocket scientist to do this one. no hard feelings if you cant or dont try though. lol.
i to have noticed that some fords use the same shaped interior lights as holdens.....which ford has ford on them and holden has some other name ....BUT its true ford used the same lights as holden on the ea? i think i saw em on not sure but it was one of them
If you want something a lil more flash you can also get some cardboard and cut out shapes sutch as flames or holden symbols. Just stick your cutout to the roof linning cardboard before the material. Then cover with glue and material then just push it all down hard especially around your cutout's edges.
You then have an embosed roof linning for the extra cost of some card board
Im about to embark on this project for a wagon. The question I have is with the clips for the front and seat belt trims. Are they just plastic clips which will come off with a bit of pulling?
Whats the best way to remove them without damaging the plastics?
im pretty shore they are just plastic. cant realy remember but i remember i broke a few. but its not noticables. jsut be careful when pulling them and you should be fine
Let us know how it goes
They are a Ford/GM common part, they also have the GM part number there also. Some will have Ford logos as well.
I think theres pics of this in my ride section ive also aluded to it a few times throughout this thread, its quite easy, you really need to use specific glue for it however and be very careful yet also very fast.
I plan on doing mine again when it gets colder here, however ill be doing it with viynl so i will probally document the process and do a simple write up.
do you have to apply new foam or can you just glue new fabric over once youve cleaned??
i was just going to glue grey sub-box fabric onto my carboard
