How To Repair Reverse Light Switch on Auto VR/VS Commodore
Tools Needed:
Phillips Head screwdriver
Flat Head screwdriver
Time Required:
15 – 30 minutes
Instructions
1.Remove the surround from the gear lever, it just pops out. Then remove the white piece as well, make sure you have disconnected the cigarette lighter and the light for the selector.
2.You should see the switch Refer to pic 1
3.Undo the two screws and unplug the connector. Then slide the switch off the transmission. Refer to pic 2
4.Now you have got the switch out you should have a part looking similar to mine. Refer to pic 3
5.On the side that the wires come off there is a little green clip thing, you need to push on that. Refer to pic 4
6.Whilst you are pushing on the green clip insert a screwdriver into the other side of the switch. Refer to pic 5
7.Gently lever the green piece from the switch. There isn’t anything in there that you have to be careful of. Refer to pic 6
8.Now you can slide the black bits apart and you should see the contacts on both parts. Refer to pic 8
9.Bend the contacts out until they are flush with or just outside the rim. Refer to pic 9
10.Once you have done that you can put it all back together again and test it in the car, after you have screwed it back down. Mine worked perfectly the first time. I also checked to see if the car would start in Neutral and Park. It was perfect.

yep for sure, im glad i didnt have to give Holden any more money! im pretty sure that this is the same thing that stuffs up when you cant get the car to start properly in park. so this may fix that issue too!
Great thread, i am going to have to do this with my car, the reverse lights only come on 50% of the time if you're lucky enough to get it in the sweet spot. How do you disconnect the cigarette lighter?
there is 2 plugs under the piece of plastic that you remove, one is for the cigarette lighter and one is for the light for the cigarette lighter, they are fairly easy to unclip.
^ah, easy as then. So it's just a plug like the one thats connected to the trans in the first 2 pics?
pretty much, you will work it out when u see it anyway.
ok, i did that. still no reverse lights! but when i push down on the leaver, about halfway between N and R, they come on. any help please?
fixed it. all i had to do was take the top screw out, and push the changer towards the gear stick and tighten the bottom one.
must be a dodgy connection...
Champiooon, not only do my lights work, but the old girl doesnt struggle to start now either
could of placed a "prick to remove" warning on the green plug! cheers though worked,
