Default Fuel doors electric release?

Hi there,

i grafted a commodore (VL) fuel door into my FE Holden wagon.

this was great until I snapped it off.. why are these things so flimsy? and y was i dumb enough to use one!!!

anyway, I wanted to ask if there is a fuel door I can use with an electric release... if so, which models commodore have them.

I will get one from the wreckers.

Cheers for your help.

Ed

I don't think there's any that have an electric release. Everything up to VK was non-lockable - no cable at all. VL-VS are all definitely cable operated. VT onwards I'm pretty sure are all cable operated (my 2002 Statesman certainly is). Have you thought about grafting on a commodore boot release solenoid onto the fuel door? Would obviously require a few modifications but it would achieve what you're after.

that's a shame.. the JR-JS vectra I found out have an electric release but these are hard to come by from a wrecker.

BUT>.. heaven forbid Ford Falcon has an electric release.

i may try the F&%D item and see how it fits up.

Thanks for the info, will post pics when I get it going if anyone is interested.

Cheers

Ed

I havent seen what the elctric fuel door releases look like, but I would be very careful how you do it. Keep in mind that solenoids/relays/switches all produce sparks when they operate, which can be an issue around fuel vapours. I would assume the solenoids used for this purpose are fully sealed so make sure you use the genuine item. Dont use a boot release solenoid or anything similar. It will probably blow the door off. Just thought I should mention this.

Has been done before with an EA-EB Falcon boot release solenoid installed into a VN (another forum has a good how-to) where the solenoid ends up getting mounted under the parcel shelf inside the boot with wiring running alongside the rear lighting harness. The fact it's mounted in the boot (far enough removed from from vapour hoses from the fuel tank) it would be safe. Otherwise all solenoids for boot releases would be illegal. Having said that, drilling mounting holes in the parcel shelf may well make the modification illegal anyway.
