Yeah took us ages to work why people kept smashing bottles out the front of our house, it wasnt until we came home and seen a group of people with baseball bats out the front we **** ourselves. Turns out they were smashing the fixed camera all that time.... BUT joke was on them, it wasnt even a real camera lol.

Yeah theres a speed camera near my place that is smashed on a weekly basis, but they keep repairing it because its such a cash magnet. Ive seen it carried halfway down the road once, the box missing and sitting in the pub carpark across the road.

yeah they usually have 1 or 2

the one up road from me has one looking directly down and other across road that covers that whole area.

If anyone gets any ideas I would remember this .... but there are ways of avoiding detection , but I'm not condoning this in anyway as to be busted for damage to them the cops & judges would make an example out of you.

not to mention if completely damaged and needs replacing ( you cut one down and took it) then the cost to replace one would be like $50000 and thats not including the fines you would also have to pay.

Not all that funny... Speed camera's wouldn't be revenue raisers if people didn't speed...

Plus guess who foots the bill for all the cameras that are vandalised...

The private corporation who is responsible for installing them in the first place. It's all outsourced these days. The corporations just make their dollar from a percentage of all fines taken by the cameras. If the camera is damaged, it's their loss.

Police hunt man who smashed $120,000 speed camera

    Nicole Cox, police reporter

    January 02, 2009 12:30pm

POLICE are hunting a Multanova vandal who destroyed a $120,000 speed camera by smashing it against a power pole in a brazen daylight attack.

The Multanova had been monitoring northbound traffic on West Coast Highway, Swanbourne at 4.50pm on Tuesday when, without warning, the man walked up to the device and smashed it.

The camera operator was not physically threatened in the attack, but used his mobile phone to take photos of the offender.

Det Sen-Constable Gary Simpson said police were investigating whether the attack was in retalliation for being caught speeding and detectives were trawling the camera's film to see if the man had been snapped in the lead-up to the attack.

``We deem this as a serious attack and we will investigate it to the full extent of the law,'' Det Sen-Constable Simpson said.

``The camera operator, although fearing for his safety, was able to take photos of the person of interest who fled the scene running down Lynton Street.

``I'm led to believe (the camera) is beyond repair.''

He said if the man was apprehended and charged, police would seek restitution to replace the Multanova, which costs $120,000.

Det Sen-Constable Simpson said despite community belief that speed cameras were revenue raisers, Multanovas did reduce road trauma.

``WA Police will use any means available to reduce the deaths on our roads...Speed cameras have been proven to work so obviously we will continue to use them.''

The person of interest is described as a male, with a tanned complexion, between 30 and 40 years old, about 178cm tall and of a solid build with short shaven dark hair. He was wearing a white singlet and dark shorts at the time of the attack.

i find it funny that people find them so offensive Like Jester said, don't speed, you won't get done. Those that feel they need to vandalise one are usually the hoons that enjoy breaking the law and get pissed off because they can't get away with it.
Don't get me wrong, i'm not always an angel on the highway, but i don't speed excessively, and if i am caught, as i have been in the past, i will wear it without any gripes. Although since having to attend MVA's that involve speed and fatalities in the past few years, i behave myself these days.
I DO NOT however exceed the speed limit on suburban roads.
As for hidden cameras, in NSW they must have a sign telling you there is a speed monitoring device in use.... usually right alongside it.

I remember one guy picking up the box in the days when they would leave the box out of the vehicle without an operator. This guy couldn't destroy it, so he threw it on the nature strip again facing a house. Wonder if the house got clocked speeding! :P
