Is 'custom' really 'custom'?

To often we see cars described as 'custom' that have nothing more than altezzas and perhaps different wheels.

Do you believe that the word 'custom' is too often bandied about to describe only basic changes?

I agree, custom to me implies something really really special, not just some basic bits n pieces, such as lights or rims.

hell no, custom is somthing that u need to look at more than once, and it has to stand out in the crowd. having rims, an exhaust and lights does not make the car custom

Custom to me Implies my old VN or any other "non original" motor/interior combination, Even possibly exterior within reason.

EG: My VN Had VS Caprice dash, VY Ecotec Motor, VT Seats, list goes on, And I still never called it custom...

Well if your going by technically speaking custom means its changed or modded to suit the customer but yea id say custom is a bit more than that like having something out of the ordinary because for example a civic lowered with mags and a cannon is more fail than custom haha

Not everyone has the skills and can do the same things, so what's custom to one person may be not be custom to another. Some people probably look at changing anything stock on the car makes it by definition, "customised".

Custom to me means there is something that's unique, one off, or a modification that has needed fabricating, moulding etc.

Custom car is something you just cant go down to the local corner bolt on shop and buy.

Things like chopped roof, tricked up paint, VY tail lights into a VN

Custom to me, is a mod (interior or exterior) that is a one off and is original that someone has thought up and had done to their vehicle.

Not painting interior parts etc, that's not custom, because everyone else who has done it, has it

OR, mods, paint colour schemes, interior parts and interior colour schemes that aren't common, that someone has mixed up and made look good, and hasn't been seen much before, eg: that car Troy posted above.

Doesnt matter if its custom to the owner, if its the same as the 30000000 other cars with the exact same mods done to it, its hardly custom is it? Custom implies uniqueness. Lowered and clear indicators with an exhaust should never be called custom.

Its like when youre looking at cam's, the description says "Custom Grind", theres nothing custom about it, its based off an off the shelf grind.

Haha, just after i made my post i thought of the cam thing, i love how people advertise a "custom grind based on a Wade blah blah blah cam grind" lol. How is it custom if it's based on an original grind of another cam?

Custom = uniquness

Something that is truely 1 of a kind. No matter how many bits you bolt on it will be the same as someone else has got. I have bits in mine that I came up with the idea for, then spent hours fabricating parts, and still only claim them to be custom "bits". Oh, and naturally I've seen heaps others with the same ideas since

I'd say custom is anything that is unique and has changed the car from standard. Whether it be full custom running gear with balls or full riced up car.
Only problem is once everyone starts doing the same and copying everyone else, the look will be stereotyped as something or as a certain look. It will still be custom, but not so unique.
And some looks, no one will ever like.

thats from the dictionary fellas.. but when i think of custom i to think of extremely different cars as in custom made panels etc.. but i guess a modified car to ur personal specifications or preference is in fact custom.

The point people are making is that "customise" implies the vehicle is unique. Most of the "custom" cars popping up here have some seat covers, rims, few bits of rice, and self-proclaim themselves as "custom", when they ain't in any way unique or special.
