There is an idea floating around for the past few years about bringing back national service in the armed forces as a way to cut back on the criminal activies of the younger generations.

'There would be no weapons training but have a heavy focus on sports, recreation and career training in professions like engineering, computer science and culinary arts - all in a bid to see youths leave the service less likely to commit crimes, become unemployed or join a criminal gang.

Youths who go on to a post-secondary education, an apprenticeship, a professional sports contract or skilled full-time work after high school would be exempt from joining the service.' full artical

i dunno about for everyone, but i think it should be explored maybe as a punishment alternative to jail.
always seem to hear that there isn't enough room in jails for offenders so they get lax sentences, couple of years being yelled at would make some see the light

Sorry, but the last place crims should go is int he armed forces. Do you realise how much TRUST you need to have as a soldier? Not sure about you, but I certainly do not trust any criminal.

National Service is a great idea, many countries still do it. No harm in sending kids off to the military for a couple of years.

i seriously think our younger generation is wrecked already..i went to the shops during latenight shopping last week and all the kids were hanging around being all cool and stuff..the attitude that comes with the arse cheek high tight jeans and stupid haircuts is something to worry about...nothings going to work on them i dont think and i wouldnt trust them in the army or any armed forces..

how about alowing parents the ability to be able to disiplin their kiddies without fear of being sent to jail themselfs.



having served in the armed forces, i would not want to serve next to a person who i dont trust. you cant give a crim arms training, thats just a weapon for disaster, and as a punishment, yeah that wont work either.

I agree with it. While they are at it, make them learn a trade to try and compensate for the skills shortage we have at the moment. After that if they want to pursue the trade they can.. or they can go on to something else. Atleast you know at the end of the day if they get arsed as an IT Tech they can always go and service cars instead of being on the dole.

Corporal punishment has been banned.
Smacking your children will be banned.
As for National Service. Today it wouldn't be
what you or I would imagine.
They would probably teach environmental awareness,
gender equality issues and other leftest dribble.
The result would be still no discipline.

its about damn time they reconsidered this!!! i'd like to see all those who are un-employed (and have been so for 3months+ i.e not actively searching for a new job...) also added to this list... just so they aren't slacking around doing nothing and getting money for it.

I don't think it is intended as a substitute to jail. It is arguable that a lot of criminals end up that way just as a product of a toxic environment - ie positive environment = totally different outcome.

In those circumstances I do believe that the old "Nasho" could give young people a great head start in life, not necessarily as a soldier but a start in any number of trades and vocations.

Doesn't the "work for the dole" scheme take care of that one??? Very different issue. Nasho should not be a punishment but another option to give that age group a start in their careers with the additional benefit of helping the country.

With our aging population alot of the 'old school' guys in the building industry are due to retire and 'todays youth' seem more to be heading into IT and similar areas. Eventually it will hit.. it probably hasn't had a great deal of impact but with a growing population it will. Honestly, I think it's awesome. As the shortage becomes more apparent I will be able to charge through the roof!

LoLs - funny you should mention the building industry. 20 years ago 99% of carpenters were brought up on pitched roofs and trusses were a luxury. These days less than 10% of apprentices can pitch a roof and struggle with anything more than simple trussed roofs. The problem is that trusses aren't a total solution and the reno industry is going to struggle in years to come.

Did you even bother to read the proposed idea where it says they wont be given weapons? Just the 'sport' and 'trade' aspect of the defence force.

I'd say bring it back for the people on the dole, and people who have committed minor crimes, graffitti, shop lifting, minor assaults, drugs, pub brawlers, tax evasion etc. The French Foriegn legion at its best were full of people who should have been in jail in their own countries. Heck in some European wars of late, some paramilitaries filled their ranks with killers and rapist from the jails to commit atrocities. So those who want to leave school early without doing apprenticeship, and hang around pot houses during the day, pissing of the public, etc and the cops don't wanna touch them, chuck them in there. 6 months rotation in Afghanistan will sort them out.

Singapore is an excellent example of compulsory conscription, battle ready, safest country and people retire millionaires, not some shitty super fund.

The downside to compulsory conscription that i know of people close to me was in South Aftrica, it was compulsory for whites to only go on the army, and due to that many committed suicide. So here it should be voluntary and then for louts.
