Do you agree with compulsory voting. and should people be fined if they choose not to vote.

compulsory. It gives a more accurate outcome if everyone votes, insted of all the hardcore one-siders flocking to public schools.

I'll always be of the opinion that it shouldn't be compulsory. Some people do politics, others don't. I don't, and i'll never vote.

Hows this for irony, if i don't vote, i get a fine. If i don't pay said fine (which i wont, politics is nothing to do with me, so not paying for it) then i can be thrown in jail, convicted, thus losing my right to vote......

WA the fine is $35, you don't pay that fine and eventually it gets too $120 and your license and any cars registrations under your name are suspended... Stooopid idea.

ETA: I don't vote... I opt to pay the $35.

I fell off the register. I went to vote last time and got told I had to fill out a heap of forms before I voted. However I was late for the drags (I stoped at the hall on the way) and I said well.... do I get a fine if I don't? and they said no you can't get a fine if you are not on the list. So I said. ok next time/later etc, gota go!

Then turn up, tick you name off the register, and leave!

Seriously, you don't have to vote, but you do have to turn up, or you can go and be Big Bubba's Bitch in jail.

Law should be made that if you DONT vote, you lose any government entitlements, why should someone be entitled to medicare etc if they cannot take 15 minutes every now and then to vote?

Shouldn't be compulsory. I don't follow politics enough to make a good judgement on any party. I'm better off not voting.

Perhaps you are better off educating yourself and voting, its not hard to read political parties policies.

Love how Australians seem to be "too much effort so cant be ****ed".

Lol - How do you think we got the drongo we have now.

Somehow I think we might end up footing most of the global emissions bill. However the Chairman will get his spot on the UN so it's all good.

I'm not sure whats worse? People voting who don't know who the **** they want to vote for? Or people not voting, and getting someone who the VOTERS actually want in (which has happened with rudd)

It's a difficult one. The Australian public only have themselves to blame. How surprising that those that admit to voting ALP are very few and far between.

    compulsory.

if it isn't.... then those who dont give a shit wont vote (and by nature are typically less conservative folks), but all the conservative vocal minorities WILL still vote... stacking the votes in their favour.

that's the problem with the US... at least until obama came along. he gave a lot of those "normally dont vote" voters a reason to vote. until then, the idiot conservatives voted bush in.... twice!

I'm not so sure about that. The government is treading a very dangerous line over their Extra Tax System and should count themselves lucky they dodged a bullet when it got voted down. I seriously suspect the reason we haven't had a DD Election over this issue is because they have done their polling and know they will loose.

As the economic crisis heads into a distant memory and the realities of paying back all the over the top spending start to hit home, I suspect the ALP will have some massive political headaches to deal with. History may well record Rudd and his economic mismanagment right up there with that custer**** Whitlam.

Congratulations on putting your hand up and admitting your voting mistake though . Many in your situation hide and pretend it never happened.
