i cant go many places without someone being a smart ass or start a fight just for looking them in the eye or something stupid, so id rather them not have a gun on them too.

Guns for recreation purposes are fine, but people who use excuses like protection don't deserve them. Americans for example.

you're right, but guns do make it easier for people to kill people. Think of it as a catalyst in a chemical reaction.

sure the wrong ppl getting their hands on them if they want em is inevitable, but making them more accessible is crazy. Theres too many dick heads around to justify making it easy to get, and too many ppl who will fire if they get slightly heated. Just look at how much road rage and fighting in general there is. Take these violence situations, add a pistol and now youve got a corpse... They should be damn near impossible to get, for protection, hunting, whatever. There too dangerous too have as a normal thing. My opinion.

at the end of the day a gun is a tool to be used to hunt food not to be used for any thing else. i think we should have the right to have them but need to learn how to use them properly and safely and this is the responsibility of the parents

We need them for feral animal control and putting down crippled livestock. Baiting is reasonably effective, but it's only part of it, and 1080 bait is a slow and painful death, horrible when a dog of yours digs up a fox bait. Firearms should be allowed to those who need them and prove that they can operate and maintain correctly, more restricted than what they are now. Maybe a psychology test need's to be part of the licensing?

I did all the licensing processes a few months ago....
Was 100 times easier to get a gun license than it was to get my Drivers license!!

I think it should be made a lot harder, and also take a lot longer....
Generally, you can have a gun license within 4 weeks of doing a safety course!!
As long as you have cash, a gun of your choice is not far away!!

I bought a Highpower Centrefire Rifle with scope for my 1st gun.....
I think 1st guns should be restricted as well, damn, I could cut tree's down with mine!!

It makes me cringe to think it is possible for the wrong type of individuals to get their hands on something like this so quickly!!
If I'm not pulling Toyota's out of the Bush, I'm pulling 12's in the Sig :-)

I can see no reason why the general public need to carry or have firearms at home in Australia. Overall the rules (in Vic anyway) are pretty good. I'd go a little further and ban the storage of firearms at private residences totally.

Yeah weve had guns for years in Queensland. Living on a large property we had problems with foxes getting into our chickens and the occasional wild pig destroying gardens etc. Guns were a useful tool. In suburban Melbourne though, you have no use for them, so theres no need for you to have them - pretty simple.

Our society is much different to America's and dont see guns as being a huge issue like it is over there, but id like to see them restricted to people with a use for them. People who own country properties, people who go hunting, part of a gun club etc. Not just because hey look at what ive got.

Thats the way, big guns FTW! Numerous problems can be sloved with a gun. The massacre at port artuhur would have been stoped in its tracks if someone else had a gun and wasted the bloke before he did to much damage. I think its a good idea for law abiding citizens to own guns, because atm its the crims who have the guns and the power.

Of course you do need to parallel this with the countless less shootings because there were no guns nearby when Joe Q Idiot does his nut because the mrs crashed the car or similar. One could argue that even tighter gun control may have prevented the tragedy you mentioned all together.

wonder how many people in america get murdered by their own weapon...i believe if more people had a gun there would be MORE murders not less...someone fires a gun and others would pull theirs and start shooting indiscriminately then thered be multiple murderers...i cant prove it would happen that way just like you cant prove it wouldnt...

All this talk about guns has got me thinking just how usefull they could be. Say someone is too close to my commodore i dont have to walk over and pick a fight i can just gun them down form acrss the street and road rages with out law bikies (it has happened to me before) i could just gun him down instead of reversing over him.

    ban Softies not guns.

laws only apply to those who abide by them. so it won't effect the criminals to much except maybe reduce the total available to them if the general public doesn't have em.

having said that. in the past i have enjoy'd going to the range and pulverizing a target or shooting some rabbits (pests) on a mates farm so i don't see the need to ban em. just regulate them. i personally don't have firearms at home but my brother does.

someone mentioned compulsory ownership. there is one province in a american state (texas i think) where this is the law and they have fairly low crime rates if memory serves correctly. i also believe you can't just buy the weapon, you actually need to attend some sort of course where you are tough proper handling techniques/cleaning and storage etc.

here in NZ it's not totally easy to get a firearms license. you need to sit test, the police speak to two persons to get references, they visit you residence and talk to your family and you need to show that you have adequate storage facilities for any firearms that you may purchase (which is dependent on the type of license you get) assuming you get said license.

All to easy to grab a hand gun and shoot the wife in a split second of rage when she throws a plate that happens to smack you in the head. Happens all the time in the States, having them not available in times like that is the goal. The attitude of the people in Australia as a whole isn't mature and responsible enough for everyone to be issued military guns either like in some countrys so best to not have any

I know i'm deviating a little bit but my grandfather knew a local cop that used to regularly let a few go in his suburban backyard.
