so here is the situation:
you got an 8mm bolt to get to in a really tight spot. the only tool you can get to it with is an open ended spanner. you noticed that you can either do a little turn (1/8th) and quickly get the spanner on and off for the next 1/8th of a turn OR you can do 1/4 of a turn but it takes you twice as long to get the spanner back off and on for the next turn.
make sense?... GO!
gah! its long bolt, say 15mm you gotta undo and you cant get your fingers to it. either way itll take 10 mins to undo
well if the both is tight i will try and get it to move for a longer distance so i will do 1/4 turn.
but then when its not so tight i will change to 1/8th of a turn just because it will be easier and i will easily get in a quick rhythm.
Agree'd, although I tend to reach for my ratchet spanners
If its loose-ish, fingers
If its too snug for fingers, but loose-ish for a spanner, then quarter turn,
If its pretty tight, then I'll take whatever I can, 1/8th turn.
But its only verrry rarely that you can't get something like a ratchet, or ratchet spanner on to, (with 1/4" drive, 3/8" drive 1/2" drive and 3/4" drive ratchet/socket sets handy) so I haven't used spanners in a while, last time was on the A/C hoses of the VP

far out! quit blowing holes in my pollok, lets say your undoing a nylon nut.. some torque all the way through.
ok thenif it was tricky to get the spanner on/off (you know those bolts that for some reason don't want a spanner around them?) then I'd go a 1/4 of a turn, just cause I'm lazy, but if it was a loose fit spanner to bolt, not too tight, then 1/8 of a turn!
Theres just too many variables to give you a straight answer ari
would need to judge each situation on its own merit![]()
im a 1/8th fast. cos' it feels like your making more progress and less chance of skinning your knuckles.
This poll reminds me of the many times I've been camped under the front of a Commodore undoing a LHS engine mount....ooh how I wish I had a 15mm open ended stubby ratchet spanner in my possession....
a little patience 1/8th turn, its off in no time
other: if it takes that much effort convince myself the bolt is not really "that" important and leave it off![]()

normally i'm a 1/4 turner as i'm lazy but most of the time i'll just call my mate up invite him around for a few beers then tell him he has to earn the beers ......works every time and the best part is he always rocks up covered from head to toe in ford clothing then gets covered in shit working on my car
whats the difference between my missus and my blower??
well they both whine but the blower actually puts out
normally i accidently get sideways go oh shit and my arse tightens itself does that count![]()
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong

I'd work at it litlle at a time - until my fingers wont hold the spanner any more! (old fingers) Then give it a rest for a while for the hands to recover![]()

Mate, i've done probably 20 (mabye more) sets of Commodore engine mounts, they're a piece of piss....I don't understand why everyone pisses & moans about them.
Sorry for the off topic Ari.
haaha i love those bolts, 1/8th- slow n steady, or i'll get the shits and break something.
and those ratchet spanners kick ass.
Sidchrome ratchet spanners ??
