DIY safety campaign – tell us what you think!

Nearly 50 Aussie men have died over the past decade after getting under their car which had been raised for DIY repair or maintenance work using a jack, ramp or stands.

That’s nearly five deaths a year, not counting the many other serious and often irreversible injuries people have suffered.

Australian governments are developing a joint campaign to raise awareness of the very real risks of death and serious injury when working under your car, and would like your feedback on some possible campaign slogans.

Suggested slogans are:

1. Don’t be a jackass with jacks
2. Don’t be a tool with jacks!
3. Don’t be a jerk with jacks!
4. Look before you lift!
5. Think before you lift!

Which one do YOU like better? Which message would make you think twice before using a jack to get under your car? Do you have other ideas?

The way I see it, It is a lot at fault to being lazy, User error, Or People attempting maintenance with a Jack that is Supplied with a vehicle.

Jack, Stand, Service (Raise your vehicle using a jack, Support it with a Stand, Service vehicle)



The slogan ideas you provided:

Or, go the same route as cigarettes and put pictures of disfigured jacking accident victims on them.

The one issue I see with these sorts of campaigns.

Those of us who are start enough to take notice of this sort of ad/campaign are already practice safe methods of working around cars in particular when under them and those us who are stupid enough not to be safe when working under a car will also be too stupid to notice the adds.

So I don't full understand who the target audience is?

It's a bit like TAC "Drink and Drive" ads. Those of us who are smart enough to take note of the ads area already smart enough not to do it in the first place and the idiots who drink and drive are too stupid to take note.

Maybe there should be a compulsary IQ test for anyone purchasing a jack, body stands, ramps, etc. Then stupid people will lose the means to hurt themselves in exciting ways.

Having said that, if we have yet another campaign aimed at reducing stupid people fatalities, this is concerning from a evolutionary perspective as the more stupid people there are out there breeding and passing on their genes, the our species will regress.

Bit of a catch 22 really.

None of those slogans are any good. The issue is many peope dont realise a jack is for ONLY for lifting a car, NOT for supporting it. A lame slogan calling them a jackass does nothing to help educate them

OR the government could introduce a jack-accident-prevention tax, which doubles the price of anything that requires a jack to be installed -unless a special "JAP" license is presented on purchase, which is given to people after buying a set of stands and completing a safe jack/stand working course.

Being the narsesist that I am, I am a great fan of what I said in my How to for changing tie rods ends:

If you don't have car stands; buy some. If you can't buy some; borrow some. If you can't borrow some; DON'T do this procedure.

And just change the last past to: GTFO from under your car.

If you dont know how to use a jack then you obviously dont know how to fix anything underneath....
Common sense should be used when working on cars and people who are to lazy to look on youtube, google or a car manual on how to jack up a car properly, then they deserve what they get for beng lazy.
And also, never get under a car only supported by a jack...... simple

In the end, after extensive slogan testing (incl. beyond this forum), the chosen slogan was: “Don’t be a jackass with jacks”. TBH, you can't fix them.. You get safety conscious people (like myself) that wont do anything without stands or ramps, and then you get people that jump under with the stock jack under it..

There are labels on every jack saying not to hop under without a stand..
