    Default Vn Or Vy !!!

    Hey Ladies and Gentlemen....

I am currently saving money for a car and i have about $11,000 in my bank account and i cant make a decision on what i should get i am wanting to know what you guy and gals think. I am tossing up between either a $16,000 VY which is alot newer or a VN Calais Series 1 which wouldn't cost much at all.

well toss it up you can have a car thats 18 years old or one thats 5 prolly a $10g difference but if you do get the calais with the money you save you will prolly have to spend it to get it right the VN's are prone to problems due to age dont get me wrong the are good cars but im just tellin you from experience with a mates VN he has had constant problems since he has had it

Ive got a vn and havnt had a single problem in more then 2 years and i flog it a fair bit. But if i had the money i would still get the VY just because its newer. Most VNs are run down at the moment. But on the other hand, you could buy the VN and with the left over money you could make a pretty sweet VN. It would be one of a kind, unlike if you get a stock VY it will just be like the rest.

i'd go the vy, im guessing its your first car so you have to have a 6 anyway and the vy exec's are quite comfy inside

I'd say the VY even though it may be a bit extra.
with the VN you would probably spend the extra money on repairs, etc.
not as many problems with the VY and they look nicer

VNs1 vs VY, thats the strangest jump I have ever seen?

usually more of a VN/VP or VR/VS or VT/VX/VY choice, sort of question IMO lol

My advice is look at other models.

Dont buy spend all that money and buy an exec. Buy something thats going to make you happy. My biggest regret is not buying a VN SS instead of a V6 VN Berlina. My second biggest regret is then buying a VS Exec as a daily instead of a VS Calais.

I would go with the VN for a frist car, he can flog it round n get to know tha car how they handle yadda yadda, where as if u got a VY u would want to play very easy as that woul be alot of doh lost if u smashed it.

I would go with a older car as a first car, use that for a few yrs get ya driving skillls together and wat not then go out n buy the new car.

No point buyin a expensive car as a first then crashing it as u didnt know how to handle the situation correctly.

If u smashed the VY thats 15g or so gone.
if u smashed the VN that wat 3g max

Thats how i would go about it if it were my choice, i would rather a cheap car that could get smashed than loose 15g on a newer modle.

My mate just grabbed an ex undercover cop car, VZ exec with 4 power windows, side airbags, very clean and tidy, paid i think 16k at the auctions for it. He did well to get it, i wouldnt consider the VN when your looking at something so new. If your looking older, find yourself a nice yank tank or something to cruise in

Also take into account depreciation... You wont really lose out on a VN, but you will on a VY. Oils, coolants are also more expensive on anything after VR.

Save a little bit more and go for the VY, you may be able to find a good VN for a lot cheaper but lets face it. Its an old car, its going to have problems. Atleast with a VY its quite new and hasnt been through the amount of wear and tear.

But on the other hand youre going to be paying through the nose for insurance...

mate go in the middle. get a VS / VT Calais. I have a VP and had a VN. (1st / 2nd car) They do go very well for a first car, and despite what people say, they don't give you much trouble, unless you drive them hard or they've had a hard life. Occasionally you will have issues (i just blew the headgasket) but that can happen to any car.

In 2 years, i have bought the VN and the VP, excluding the headgasket and my mods and just general 10,000km service, i'm looking at about $600-$1000 in actual repairs or replacement parts. everything still goes pretty well on them.

in saying that though, my dad has a VS, and while my VP is faster and cheaper, had i had my time over, and a few extra $$$ i would outlay and get the VS calais. this will give you probably more features than a VY exec / acclaim, and will be 1/3 the price (if you want auto - $5K). the engine is exactly the same Ecotec (3.8L roughly 150kw +/- a few) and the transmission is the same too. The VS is lighter i believe, so in theory it should be about the same speed, if not quicker.

For a first car, my preference would be the VP (don't go with the VN - a bit too old in my opinion) but if you want newer, get the VS. Don't buy the VY - waste of money

im with vk_308, go for a vt calais, will probably be around the same price as the vy but will have more features, and will more then likely get more money in the future for resale, which is why getting a executive in a newish car is prob a bad choice IMO, just spend the little extra and go for the calais

VY, why buy something that is going on 15 years or more old?

you'll be up for money $$$$$ eventually. spend the extra on a vy, why buy a 2GB ipod nano for 240 when you can get a 30GB ipod video for a bit over 100 more... same thing.

newer model, lower km's etc etc, spend the extra.
save the cash, wait it out.

Well, if you want a car you modify to your liking, then go the VN Calais or, whatever model you like thats going to leave you some decent change to play with.

If you go the VY, with 11 grand, you'll most likely only get a base model executive, or if your lucky a VY Berlina.

It's your choice as to what you want in the end, but remember, just because the VY is 15 odd years newer than the VN, doesn't mean it's going to have less problems. My VN has less km's than my boyfriends VT. And still runs like a dream.

    I agree with Mr_Slim.

Look around for a VS. You can buy a nice manual 5L VS for under 11 grand, and still have money for mods and repairs to get it humming beautifully. And in my opinion VS's are probally one of the best Commodores made and are good bang for buck nowadays.

Hell you could even go a VR/VS Clubby.

VY mate, hands down, handle better, the ecotec engine is a LOT better than the old buick, and it will look a LOT better. otherwise for that price u could get a good VX? or something in the middle?

hmmmm, vy-vn, I agree with alot of the comments others have made, although, vy6cyl, still only an ecotec, just as old as the 3.8v6 in the vn, vy body shape-debateable, you can get an awesome vn with kit an extras for that money. All the elecs of the calais-much better than the executive vy, Age, well, the older they are the beter the get, for the parts for a vn are common and a hole lot cheaper than vy. Depreciation/Value, Pay 15k+ for vy, it'll be worth 10k in 2 years, Pay 5-8k for immaculate vn, it'll hold it's value. It all depends on personal preferences for there are so many factors.
